The lightly race-prepped TRD Pro Tundra is back from Baja — with a win!

The TRD Pro Tundra jumped and roared its giant V8 the 1200 miles to the finish line in first place, then cruised home the 1000 miles back to the start line for good measure. Was it showroom-fresh upon arrival back to Toyota headquarters in Torrance?

Not exactly!  A huge gash in the sheetmetal and rear fender shows the fury of racing. But the fact that the TRD Pro Tundra continued on its mission is impressive.2015 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Baja 1000 2

A solid achievement and vote of confidence in the new TRD Pro package’s upgrades and accessories. The TRD Pro Tundra stickers from about $43,000 and is available in showrooms now.

Included here are the details of the Ironman-led Baja 1000 win, plus a big set of photos showing the TRD Pro SEMA truck.

One thing to consider about racing: it is hot and intense and physical. The constant strain raises drivers’ core temps amid hot cockpits and little rest over the race.

On the Baja 1000 — those sensations of any track race are thrown into a rock crusher.

The ride is ROUGH at the huge speeds these Baja 1000 competitors hit on the way to the tip of California. Imagine 85-mph with periodic huge jumps, crash landings, and hard impacts over uneven sandy clay rock.

So after that huge race, you’d be thirsty?

You will be famished and grabbing any fluids nearby. So let’s look at what winners drink in a few races:

— Formula One: Champagne.

— Indy 500: A Huge Glass of Dairy Milk

— Baja 1000?  A giant Tecate canned beer. On the Pacific beach paradise?

Godspeed, Tecate Tundra!

The 2014 race happens in November, and the Tundra TRD Pro will go on sale around that time or shortly before.

The Baja 1000 Tundra’s biggest upgrades are gnarly racing wheels/tires/roll-cage and rally lighting. Otherwise, a the race truck is a totally stock 2015 Tundra TRD Pro.

2015 Toyota Tundra TRD Pro Wins Class at Tecate SCORE Baja 1000

November 18, 2014

TORRANCE, Calif., November 18, 2014 — The 2015 Tundra TRD Pro Desert Race Truck not only raced for over 1,200 miles to a first place finish at the 47th Tecate SCORE Baja 1000, it was also driven an additional 1,000 miles back to the start line of the race.  The Toyota team was first to the finish line in its “Full Stock” class, led by team coach and legendary Toyota off-road racer Ivan “Ironman” Stewart, and piloted by Toyota engineers and Toyota athletes.

“The Baja 1000 is another test to ensure that Toyota trucks continue to exceed the expectations of our customers,” said Toyota Pickup Trucks Chief Engineer Mike Sweers. “The combination of excellent teamwork and Toyota’s quality, dependability and reliability not only got us to the finish line, but it got us there first.”

Toyota has a storied off-road racing heritage dating back to the 1980s, racking up 304 off-road wins.  Toyota has earned 27 manufacturer’s championships and 28 off-road driver’s championships. For more than three decades, Toyota Racing Development (TRD) has been an integral component of Toyota’s success in motorsports victories as well as in designing high-quality performance parts and accessories.

The TRD Pro Series is the most advanced, to date, in a long line of TRD trim levels for Toyota trucks. It consists of TRD-tuned suspension and aggressive accessories purpose-built for the rigors of off-roading. The TRD Pro parts and accessories line give Toyota owners a race-proven option for customizing their trucks.

“Winning the Full Size Stock class helps us demonstrate just how robust the new 2015 TRD Pro Series trucks are,” said Andrew Franceschini, Toyota truck marketing and communications national manager.

A trio of chase vehicles including a 4Runner, Tacoma and Tundra made the trip down to Baja and provided the race truck with fuel, tires and crew support.
