2023 LC 500 Drive Review: Lexus’s LFA Successor

2023 Lexus LC 500: Lessons From the LFA

The 2023 Lexus LC 500 is a stunning embodiment of the automaker’s commitment to creating vehicles that seamlessly blend luxury and performance. This grand tourer coupe, first introduced in 2018, is a testament to Lexus’ dedication to craftsmanship, innovation, and delivering an unforgettable driving experience. With its captivating design, potent powertrain, and impeccable interior, the LC 500 is a modern masterpiece that has earned its place among the elite in the luxury sports car segment.

Exterior Design

At first glance, the Lexus LC 500 is a true head-turner. Its low-slung, aggressive stance and bold, distinctive design language set it apart from the competition. The pronounced spindle grille, flanked by striking LED headlights, creates an immediate sense of presence. The LC 500’s long hood and short rear overhangs contribute to its classic sports car proportions. The car’s sculpted lines and well-defined curves add depth and sophistication to its exterior.

One of the standout features of the LC 500 is its attention to detail. Door handles that sit flush with the body, intricately designed wheels, and a carbon fiber roof, further enhance its aesthetic appeal. Lexus offers a variety of exterior color options, allowing buyers to personalize their LC 500 to their tastes.

2023 LC 500 Performance

Under the hood, the LC 500 packs a punch. Its 5.0-liter naturally aspirated V8 engine is a masterpiece of engineering, delivering 471 horsepower and 398 lb-ft of torque. This powerhouse is mated to a 10-speed direct shift automatic transmission, which is developed on lessons learned from the LFA. Shifts are quick and crisp, but sometimes a little harsh. The result is a 0-60 mph time of just 4.4 seconds (our testing at 4,500 ft elevation was in the 6 second range), showcasing the LC 500’s impressive acceleration. The engine’s soundtrack, a harmonious blend of growls and roars, adds to the driving excitement, and it’s a reminder of the car’s performance capabilities.

The LC 500’s chassis is designed to provide a balanced and engaging driving experience. With a near 50:50 weight distribution, rear-wheel drive, and adaptive suspension, the LC 500 is very agile. The car is at home on winding mountain roads as the suspension is a little stiff on long highway cruises.

For those who want a more environmentally conscious option, Lexus offers the LC 500h hybrid. This hybrid powertrain combines a 3.5-liter V6 engine with an electric motor to deliver a total system output of 354 horsepower. It’s an excellent choice for those who desire the LC’s style and luxury with a more efficient powerplant.

Interior Luxury

Stepping into and out of the 2023 Lexus LC 500 takes a little finesse. Low ride height, low roof, and seats with large side bolsters make entry and exit space limited. Once inside, you are greeted by a cabin that exudes opulence. The interior is a harmonious blend of high-quality materials, intricate craftsmanship, and cutting-edge technology. From the available hand-stitched leather to the optional Alcantara headliner, every detail is carefully considered. The seats are comfortable, supportive, and can be optioned with heating, ventilation, and 10-way power adjustability.

Lexus’s attention to detail is particularly evident in the analog clock, inspired by the art of Japanese craftsmanship. It’s a small but symbolic touch that adds to the overall feeling of luxury and refinement. The 10.3-inch infotainment display, controlled by the touchpad or voice commands, provides access to navigation, audio, and various vehicle settings.

Technology and Safety

Lexus equips the LC 500 with a comprehensive suite of technology and safety features. The standard Lexus Safety System+ includes adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, and pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection. These systems contribute to both safety and convenience during long drives.

The LC 500’s infotainment system is easy to use and integrates seamlessly with smartphones, offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. The available 13-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system is a treat for audiophiles, delivering exceptional sound quality.

Driving Dynamics

On the road, driving dynamics of the LC 500 are refined and precise. The adaptive suspension can be tailored to various driving modes, allowing the driver to choose between comfort and sportiness. In Sport+ mode, the LC 500 comes alive, sharpening throttle response, tightening the suspension, and enhancing steering feedback. The result is a car that can be both a comfortable cruiser and a spirited performer, depending on the driver’s preferences. In addition, Lexus added the $9,570 handling package to our tester. This package adds 21-inch forged wheels, a Torsen limited slip rear differential, active rear steering, an automatic rear wing, a carbon fiber roof, and various interior appointments. All of this makes the vehicle extremely stiff for excellent handling, but sacrifices the smooth ride making it a less comfortable grand tourer.

2023 Lexus LC 500 Final Thoughts

The 2023 Lexus LC 500 is a remarkable achievement in the luxury sports car segment. Its striking design, powerful V8 engine, and sumptuous interior all contribute to a driving experience that is nothing short of exceptional. While it may not be the most practical choice, given its limited rear-seat space and small trunk, the LC 500 excels at what it was designed for – delivering an exhilarating and stylish grand touring experience. It’s a car that combines performance and luxury in a way that few others can. This makes it a true masterpiece in the world of high-end automobiles.
