2024 Subaru WRX TR Sharpens Up Driving Experience, Gets Improved Steering and Brembo Brakes

Subiefest has emerged as a premiere attraction for not only Subaru fans looking to get in touch with other Subaru owners but also getting a glimpse at new products from Subaru themselves. The trend continues with the company pulling the veil of secrecy off of the 2024 Subaru WRX TR, which benefits from a number of key upgrades but, sadly, no giant wing.

Performance Takes Center Stage In TR

The 2024 WRX TR brings a number of key upgrades to the WRX, but performance will be taking center stage in the TR. While the turbocharged engine carries over largely unchanged from prior models, Subaru added an upgraded steering rack, stiffer springs, and revised damping rates in an attempt to improve high-speed handling behavior. Stickier Bridgestone Potenza S007 tires enhance wet and dry grip.

Meanwhile, the brakes have also benefitted from their fair share of upgrades, with larger pads and rotors being added. At the same time, Brembo-sourced six-piston front calipers and two-piston rear calipers provide higher amounts of stopping power, with a larger master cylinder also being included too. These upgrades are a far cry from a hardcore STI version, but the TR is a step in the right direction and should please enthusiasts looking to extract more fun from the WRX’s performance hardware.

TR Exterior Styling Is Wingless; New Recaro Seats Make Debut

The rest of the upgrades are minimal, with the interior getting new Recaro sport seats featuring grey and black Ultrasuede inserts and the driver’s seat getting eight-way power adjustment. Unlike the international version of the TR, the U.S. version does not have a large rear wing. Instead, a small spoiler is mounted on the trunk. It’s unknown why Subaru chose to do this for our market, but we wouldn’t be surprised if it came down to either feedback from customer surveys, cost, or regulations. The TR also gets model-exclusive wheels that add some edge to its profile out on the street.

The updates here are welcome, but the WRX is still an aging performance entry, and we hope that Subaru will eventually have a more comprehensive suite of updates planned to help it stay fresh. In the meantime, Subaru didn’t reveal exact pricing for the 2024 WRX TR. However, look for a noticeable premium over lower trim levels when it releases the final numbers later this year.
