Ford Mustang Shelby GT350
While every petrol head knows ‘Eleanor’ the Shelby GT500 Mustang that starred in the blockbuster movie “Gone in 60 Seconds” fewer are familiar with the GT350, the granddaddy of all Shelby Mustangs.
However, that will soon change as, in honour of Carroll Shelby’s 1965 original, Ford has now launched a new Shelby GT350 Mustang as the crowning glory of their sixth-generation Mustang range.
- 533 hp and 582 Nm 5.2-liter V8 featuring a Flat-plane Crankshaft
- Peak engine speed of 8,250 rpm• Race hardware for track addicts
A very special V8 sits under the GT350’s long bonnet. In contrast to the ‘normal’ bent-crank V8 Mustang motor, this street legal, race-inspired engine features a weight-optimised Flat-plane crankshaft with a 180-degree firing interval.
This configuration, normally used on supercar V8 engines, allows Ford’s naturally aspirated 5.2-litre Ti-VCT, 32-valve V8 to soar to higher revs, creating more power. Thus, its 533 hp arrives at 7,500rpm, the rev limiter cuts in at 8,250 rpm, and peak torque of 582 Nm is produced at 4,750 rpm. The aggressive soundtrack generated as the engine explores the upper reaches of its speed range is more Italian supercar than American muscle car.
Power is transferred to the rear wheels by a six-speed manual Tremec gearbox, while a Torsen limited-slip differential helps the rear wheels find the best possible traction.
Supporting this quest for optimum grip, the Shelby GT350 Mustang comes with
10.5 and 11.0×19-inch alloy wheels shod with 295/35ZR19 and 305/35ZR19
Michelin Pilot Super Sport rubber, and sports suspension featuring adaptive damping.
Underlining the cars credentials as a track day weapon are the huge Brembo brakes that use 392 mm cross-drilled vented discs clamped by six-pot callipers in front, and 380 mm cross-drilled vented discs with four-pot callipers at the rear.
Recaro sports seats and a premium sound system are part of the standard
Shelby GT350 Mustang package, which also includes Track Apps with
Electronic Line-Lock and Launch Control. Options are ‘Technology’ and ‘Track’ packages, both of which feature the adjustable MagneRide damping system as well as various convenience and multimedia features.
The Shelby GT350 Mustang is immediately identifiable by its ferocious looks that come from a combination of its distinctive front bumper/spoiler, sculpted bonnet bulge, and the front wings that accommodate the 35 mm wider front track. At the rear, the GT350 features a four-outlet sport exhaust with active valves, and a fairly discreet boot mounted spoiler lip.
The late Carroll Shelby, who unfortunately departed in May 2012, would have enjoyed this wild Mustang. His 50-year-old vision of a road racer, dressed as a daily driver is now available in Europe from US car specialists GeigerCars.de, with prices starting at 82,900 euros.
