LED TECH DETAILS
The LED low and high-beam headlights of this Platinum model are quite refreshing, especially when parked next to the also-new 2015 Expedition and its projector beams. The latest lighting of the F-150 instantly makes everything else seem very outmoded -- when when the lights are not switched on. When they are, forget-about-it...
Competing for style or energy efficiency via halogen or even HID lamps will be impossible.
The LED theme continues in the blinker setup as well, with that subtle outline illuminating for turn indicators. In an ultra-cool touch, the amber portion is only colored when the lamps are on - otherwise it is an translucent clear piece that matches the overall headlight style well.
But not, it should be noted, the lower fog lamps -- which will be as yellow as Mt. Dew next to the pure 4000K white of the LEDs above.
LED vs Halogen
But will all F-150 models have these awesome new LEDs as standard? No, they will not. Likely standard only on the Platinum range-topper, the LED option is unconfirmed on the lower trim levels as of now. Likely bundled in with a tech package, the LED brake lights of the F-150 are also missing on the cheaper XLT trim.
Overall, the new Ford truck appearance and design can hold its own with or without the LED lighting. But it is definitely an option that would be on my list if it is available. LEDs use less energy and are truly lifetime units (in most cases) that are extremely durable to any shock or impact. Another benefit of the solid-state LED setup that does not use bulbs whatsoever!
STEEL + ALUMINUM? Which is which, and why?
Steel and aluminum are often odd bed-fellows because they cannot be welded to one another, and have corrosion problems when even touching surfaces. This means thee F-150 Chassis is steel, but the bodywork is 100-percent military-grade aluminum alloy.
The required space between the frame and body mounts would seem to offer an extra opportunity to add rubber-isolating bushes in between, further enhancing refinement.
From its fully boxed, high-strength-steel frame to the use of high-strength, military-grade, aluminum alloys* in its body and bed, this F-150 takes tough to a whole new level. Weighing in as much as 700 lbs. less than its predecessor helps make this truck a whole lot more capable and more effective too. Plus, it accelerates, brakes and resists corrosion like never before. In addition, we standardized the chemistry of the aluminum alloy used in construction of the 2015 F-150 body and bed to facilitate recycling. Our aluminum scrap can be reclaimed and sent back into the manufacturing process to minimize waste.
Our new, fully-boxed high-strength steel frame is stronger and more rigid than ever with eight cross sections. Many steel components of the 2015 F-150 are designed to enable using a roll-forming process that minimizes weight and maintains strength.

On sale late this year
When it goes on sale late this year, the all-new Ford F-150 will continue the tradition of offering the broadest selection of trim levels in the full-size pickup segment. Five primary trims are available: XL, XLT, Lariat, Platinum and King Ranch. Chrome appearance packages are available with XL, XLT, Lariat and King Ranch. Monochromatic sport appearance packages are available with XL, XLT and Lariat.
The FX4 off-road package can be added to most four-wheel-drive models, improving trail capability with an electronic locking rear axle, skid plates and off-road-tuned shocks.
Both the exterior and interior design of Ford F-150 reflect decades of listening to customers and understanding their occupational and recreational needs. The exterior is characterized by a new shape that suggests capability, with a wider Built Ford Tough stance, prominent wheel arches and chiseled grille.
Comfort, utility and refinement define the truck’s interior. Ergonomically optimized seating for the front row positions enhances comfort, while extending legroom for rear passengers. Buttons and controls are optimized so they can be operated while wearing work gloves.
Storage options include laptop stowage in the center console, as well as quick storage solutions for cellphones, drinks, pens and business cards.
“Once again, the Ford F-150 establishes new standards in durability, capability, technology and efficiency to help F-150 owners be more productive 24/7 – whether for work or weekend fun,” said Nair.
The F-150 will continue to be manufactured at Ford’s Dearborn Truck Plant in Dearborn, Mich., and Kansas City Assembly Plant in Claycomo, Mo.
