2015 Mazda KOERU Concept Previews Upcoming CX-7 with Slinky Style, 7 Seats

2015 Mazda KOERU ConceptMazda just released the first official images of a swanky new crossover concept: a sporty yet long-wheelbase SUV dubbed the KOERU.

Just a single sketch so far, but we have a finger on the pulse of Mazda’s next crossover move.

We predict this concept outlines a replacement for the seven-seat CX-9 SUV for the ~2018 model year.

The CX-9 has been refreshed a few times over its lifetime, but the vehicle is near the end of a long platform and engine-sharing deal with former owners Ford Motor Company. In additon to hefty licensing fees paid to Ford to use the engine and various electronics, the CX-9 is the oldest model in the lineup and the one least-adhering to the new SkyActiv mantra.

But leaving the seven-seat crossover market would be the opposite direction to most automakers these days.

Thus, the KOERU: a preview at what a CX-5-based seven seater might look like. Much longer and wider than the CX-5, the KOERU will be a natural big brother to the CX-5 for big families and those demanding seven seats.

In production — or even non-sketch — form, the KOERU is likely to embrace the cab-backward and long hood appearance of the Mazda6, but will grow its roof height beyond the slinky X6-style tail previewed here.

Frankfurt auto show in September will include the full debut of this next-gen Mazda concept.

MAZDA KOERU DEBUTS AT THE FRANKFURT MOTOR SHOW

15/09/15

  • Carmaker presenting a distinctive new crossover SUV concept in a world premiere
  • Mazda to make a compelling statement alongside its entire new generation line-up

Frankfurt / Leverkusen, 15 September 2015. Mazda adds an ample portion of bold to its award-winning KODO – Soul of Motion design theme today as it unveils the Mazda KOERU at the 2015 Frankfurt International Motor Show (IAA). The new crossover SUV concept, which makes its global debut, was conceived to extend a new kind of value in the fast-growing and hard-fought SUV arena.

Its determined eyes, low cabin and substantial width on 21-inch wheels create a truly formidable presence with a premium level of refinement inside and out. The enriched KODO shapes deliver outstanding aerodynamics and with it high-speed stability, while Mazda’s SKYACTIV Technology includes efficient driver-oriented powertrains and suspension as well as an ingeniously rigid body and chassis that enhance handling as well as safety.

Mazda’s IAA exhibition also features the all-new Mazda MX-5 roadster complete with a range of specially developed accessories. Among these are a space age boot-lid mounted luggage carrier in a solid yet ultra-lightweight carbon construction (to be offered with a matching Moncabas suitcase) and exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels in an asymmetrical diamond-cut look.

The Japanese carmaker’s complete new-generation model line-up is of course on hand, including the all-new Mazda CX-3, which has shaken up the B-SUV segment since its European launch in June.
