Is the Renault R8 Gordini Making a Comeback? Cryptic Photo from Renault CEO Sparks Rumors

September 24, 2026

Fabrice Cambolive, head of the Renault brand, just stirred up a nice bit of buzz on LinkedIn this Wednesday, September 23, by posting on his personal account a message and an image that are as enigmatic as they are intriguing.

The Return of the Renault 8 Gordini?

You can read the line “Do you see what I see?” followed by an enigmatic promise, “More than a number, an icon reinvented.” The caption is paired with a photo that could speak louder than any press release in the world. It shows a brushed metal badge in the shape of a stylized B, resting on a black leather interior accented with blue harness-like straps. The setup is accompanied by the note “To be revealed tomorrow,” which hints at the arrival of a concept car capturing the style and spirit of the legendary Renault 8 Gordini! If we’re allowed to read into it, it’s partly about the number 8, of course, but also about how it’s stylized, which echoes Gordini’s logo—the tuner of small sportscars specialized in Renault models, which was ultimately acquired by its principal figure in 1969. But to understand the buzz this post has sparked, we also need to set the context. Renault has made the neo-retro look one of its major development axes in recent years: after the successful revival of the R5 and then the R4, it’s the adorable 1992 Twingo that makes a grand comeback in 2026 in a modernized look.

Simple showcar or future production car?

In that logic—and two years after the unveiling of the Renault 17 concept—the Renault 8 Gordini, born in 1964, also checks all the boxes for a dream comeback! Imagine a popular little sports car, French blue bodywork punctuated by white racing stripes, reviving in 2026 with a deeply modernized look. Yet, the Renault chief himself had just opened the door in September 2025, at the Munich Motor Show, telling the British press that the brand was actively exploring a return to sportier propositions and promising concrete announcements within the next twelve months. A year later, almost to the day, this teaser lands just ahead of the Paris Motor Show, scheduled from October 12 to 18, 2026, where Renault traditionally occupies the largest booth at the expo. Nothing is officially confirmed at this stage, and we’ll have to wait for the promised reveal to know whether it will be merely a showcar for display, a simple marketing wink, or a potential production model. So, it remains a mystery. Whatever happens, we’re already eager for tomorrow!
