The start of 2026 wasn’t favorable for BYD in China. Although leading the market for electric and plug-in hybrids, the company had months of falling sales, with a 41% plunge in February year over year. Yet, something has shifted: the debut of its ultra-fast charging technology is turning the tide.
The new rapid charging stations from the brand, featuring its “Flash Charging 2.0” system, which allows a full battery recharge in under 10 minutes, are drawing customers back to BYD dealerships. The company is thus addressing one of the biggest criticisms of electric vehicles: the long charging times.
Charging the battery takes as long as filling the gasoline tank
The price war has its limits. Continuously slashing prices isn’t a viable option. Margins are shrinking or disappearing, while customers drift away from showrooms waiting for the next discount. BYD has chosen to differentiate itself through technology. Its Flash Charging 2.0 system, based on the new generation Blade batteries, supports charging powers exceeding 1,000 kW in direct current.
This system is distinguished by astonishing technical specs, often summarized by the “three thousand” rule: a voltage of 1,000 V, a current of 1,000 A, and a nominal power of 1,000 kW (1 MW). In practice, the charging points can even reach a peak power of 1,360 kW.
