Many reveals of all-new cars and trucks at the 2015 Chicago Auto Show, and perhaps all-time great lineups of performance and luxury cars – both in terms of quality and quantity of cool cars offered. For us, the highlight is the Alfa Romeo stand with its incredible legacy models alongside the new 4C and 4C Spider. The 1967 33 Stradale is extra special, but the pre-war racers are pretty hot too. Concept Flashback – 1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo by Bertone

These ‘Concept Flashback’ articles are like brain candy for me. Hopefully you enjoy them too. This 1968 showcar may have been one of the first to really flirt with wedge and block themes in supercar design – ideas that would be adopted throughout the world’s best carmakers in the 1970s and beyond. This is part two of the Alfa Romeo endurance racer showcase. These long-tail machinesdirectly evolved from the original Tipo 33 Periscopo and Stradale prototypes – but made huge changes. Far less glass lowers the center of mass, while aerodynamic ground effects became a critical part of racing. This put an end to the smooth flowing surfaces of the curvy 1967 T33 Stradale and its siblings. Okay, the Tipo 33 Stradale is not quite a street-legal supercar: this is a racing prototype that competed in some of the fiercest LeMans racing battles ever seen. Among its six-plus variants in body style, length, and mechanical package: the Tipo 33 was considered to be among the top three contenders for the late-60’s golden age of endurance racing.
