European Icon Returns: Citroën 2CV Reborn as an Electric Car, Priced Like a Dacia Sandero

June 23, 2026

Neoretro designs are more fashionable than ever. After the revival of the Renault 4, the Renault 5, and the Renault Twingo, Stellantis is making a move and has decided to revive the legendary Citroën 2 CV.

Arriving in 2028, when the 80th anniversary of the launch of the first 2 CV will be reached, and it will do so with a design strongly inspired by the original 2 CV. Its main rival will be the Renault Twingo E-Tech.

Stellantis Leans on History to Slow China

Stellantis knows better than anyone how well “neoretro” cars work: new models with modern designs, but strongly inspired by iconic models of the past.

The Fiat 500 is the king of neoretro designs, but within Stellantis there are many brands that have had iconic cars in the past, and now it seems Stellantis itself is realizing this and is starting to exploit it to regain ground and, above all, to offer something that is out of reach for any Chinese brand: selling its own history.

For a long time, the only neoretro product from Stellantis has been the Fiat 500 (and its Abarth 500 cousin); however, in recent years more models have arrived, such as the Fiat Grande Panda inspired by the original Panda, the Fiat Topolino that nods to its namesake ancestor, and even the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale that pays tribute to the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale of 1967.

The point is that almost all Stellantis brands have had iconic cars, and this giant wasn’t exploiting that very well, unlike Renault and Alpine, which keep giving lessons in neoretro strategy, showing that these cars are well-liked and commercially successful.

Well, it seems Stellantis has finally reacted and decided to bring back one of the most special cars in history: the Citroën 2 CV. This has been studied for a long time; in January 2025 we already spoke about the possible return of the 2 CV in an electric format and said that the comeback could be planned for 2028. Now, Citroën has confirmed that the 2 CV is back.
