Tesla, which continues to grapple with weak sales, is facing a fresh setback across the Atlantic in its communications. And it’s not only a matter of a brand boycott over the political views of its CEO, Elon Musk; a new incident demonstrates just how disastrous the sales of the Tesla Cybertruck have become.
Reza Soltani, from Texas, wanted a Tesla Cybertruck despite everything—it’s his right. Reza placed his Cybertruck order in April 2025, but he was taken aback when Tesla immediately assigned him a VIN and notified him that he could pick up the vehicle that very day. Yet he refused to collect it and demanded another, the one they gave him had been four months neglected in a field.
When you buy a new Tesla and they hand you the keys within a few hours
When Reza Soltani placed his order in late April, he expected a long wait. When the Cybertruck hit the market, you had to wait nearly a year before you could pick up the car at a Tesla dealership. That’s why the Texan was surprised to receive a chassis number just hours after placing his order, with the confirmation that he could pick up his vehicle in Houston. Obviously, they could not have built his car already.
After taking this information as a pleasant surprise, Reza Soltani set out to find out when the Cybertruck in question was manufactured. To do so, he contacted a Tesla representative directly.
That was when he discovered that, in reality, the Cybertruck didn’t have weeks as he had thought but had rolled off the production line on January 8, 2025. “I asked through the app and someone replied with the exact date, because with the VIN you can only know the year,” he explained in the Facebook Cybertruck Owners Only group.
Not all news is good for the Texan: several Tesla owners have shared negative experiences after reclaiming a car that had spent a long time stored in a lot or parking before being sold.
Some dissatisfied customers have even explained that Tesla tried to sell them a vehicle that had been subject to a recall, following the discovery of a bodywork issue in the Cybertrucks last March: part of the upper door frame could detach while driving. The consequence was a two-week delay in delivery in order to carry out the recall.
It’s a @cybertruck apocalypse today at Giga Texas! Somewhere around 350 -400 on both the E & W sides of the factory & more coming out of the factory! Good to see so many again! pic.twitter.com/eAtuJ6azfW

The story of Reza Soltani suggests that Tesla has produced many more Cybertrucks than it has sold. In fact, at the start of April 2025 Tesla held about 2,400 Cybertrucks in stock, scattered across the gigafactory parking lots and at its dealers. The situation did not improve much thereafter: by May 2025 some estimates put the inventory at more than 10,000 units unsold, and in 2025 Cybertruck sales fell far short of initial expectations. Tesla does appear to have scaled back production and reallocated some of the staff to other models, but the Cybertruck remains a model with little demand outside the United States.
This is problematic, because the pickup envisioned by Elon Musk does not cope well with extended periods of inactivity, both due to its stainless steel body that gets dirty easily and leaves almost indelible marks, as well as due to battery wear. The rejection by informed consumers of a Cybertruck that seems old could further worsen the situation.
Tesla tried to salvage the situation by offering the pickup for under $70,000 starting in April, in order to clear the stock. Yet the damage is done; the Tesla Cybertruck is the biggest commercial failure of the last 20 years. And things are getting worse: in 2025 it sold 20,237 units in the U.S., a 48% drop from the previous year, according to Kelley Blue Book data cited by CBS.
