Omoda (and also Jaecoo) has gone in just two years from being an unknown brand in Spain with a single model (the Omoda 5) to selling its plug-in hybrids at a pace few could have imagined: in 2024 the share of these two Chinese brands from the Chery Group was 0.9%. In 2025 it rose to 1.6%.
Following the brand’s push in the D-segment, begun with the SUV 9 SHS, the new Omoda 7 SHS arrives. A plug-in hybrid with an electric range of around 90 km and an impressively spacious interior. Here is our first hands-on look.
A fastback perched between the Omoda 5 and the Omoda 9 SHS
The Chery Group knows that Europe is a major opportunity to sell its electrified cars. Last year, more than 6% of cars sold were from Chinese brands; a figure that rises to 8% if Volvo is included in the tally due to being owned by the Chinese Geely group.
Only in Spain, in 2025, 115,953 Chinese cars were sold, which already represents 10% of the market. And now not only mild-hybrids are taking share; plug-in hybrids are winning followers as batteries get bigger and bigger. The problem? Well, there are actually two: these enormous batteries add substantial extra weight to the vehicle, and owners are not usually very diligent about charging them.
Problems that, for the moment, have no solution. In this scenario, the Omoda 7 is a large car: it measures 4.6 meters long and 1.8 meters wide. It sits between its siblings the Omoda 5 and the 9 SHS and there are a couple of design details that make it quite recognizable from the rear: one is that the rear wiper is hidden in the rear spoiler.

Another distinctive feature is its headlight clusters, which incorporate quite original light patterns for what we usually see.
When the interior offers solutions to problems we may not yet have

The Omoda 7’s tech ecosystem is led by an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster and a sliding 15.6-inch central screen with a 2.5K resolution. This solution is complemented by a Head-Up Display and four-zone intelligent voice control, forming a multimodal control system.
What are we looking at? A horizontal screen that, when you pass over it with four fingers – yes, it has to be exactly four, no more, no less – slides automatically to the passenger side. Useful? Not sure, especially since there is no glove box, as that space has been allocated to wiring.

The SUV also features a two-spoke, D-shaped multifunction steering wheel. The elevated, floating tunnel houses a 50 W ultra-fast wireless charger and ample space for what you would want to stash in the glove box.
The management of all digital functions relies on the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor and a system with 12 GB of memory and 128 GB of storage. Oh, and regarding battery charging, it supports AC charging up to 6.6 kW and DC charging up to 40 kW; 30% to 80% in 20 minutes.
At the wheel of the only hybrid powertrain in the lineup

If you were wondering what the SHS surname stands for, the answer is ‘Super Hybrid System’. It is a plug-in hybrid propulsion system that combines a turbocharged four-cylinder 1.5 TGDI DHE 5th-generation gasoline engine with a dedicated DHT hybrid transmission and an 18.4 kWh battery pack, achieving a combined power output of 205 kW (279 hp) and a maximum torque of 365 Nm.

When, a few years ago, people wanted to show off a car, the most common thing was to brag about low fuel consumption, power, or extras. Now, no longer. Technology has taken center stage. But it isn’t always where we imagine it, rather in places far less obvious.
Advice offered by the brand
The combustion engine delivers 105 kW (143 hp), while the electric motor that acts as the propulsion has a maximum power of 150 kW (204 hp) and a maximum torque of 310 Nm. This electric motor acts as a generator to feed the traction battery. This combination enables an electric range of up to 92 km and a total range exceeding 1,200 km on paper, with very modest consumption, always noting that the battery should be charged regularly (WLTP mixed cycle 2.3 L/100 km).
We were able to test it on a route from Alcobendas, near Madrid, to El Escorial, in mixed cycle, and two things became clear: it is a car with outstanding value for money, and it is very, very comfortable in its ride.
One area Omoda has paid particular attention to is acoustic comfort, with double-layer soundproof glass and the support of an active noise cancellation system. On the road, cabin silence is notably present, something we appreciated. However, and this is a matter of taste, the driver’s seat position felt a bit too high despite attempts to lower the seat height, and the central tunnel, intended for storing items, can feel bulky due to its height.

The habitability is, however, outstanding: even with the front passenger’s knees and dashboard space, the rear passenger is more than comfortable. The materials feel pleasant to the touch, appear durable, and everything is well assembled.

The Omoda 7 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.4 seconds and reaches a maximum speed of 180 km/h; it isn’t a sports car and its almost two tons are noticeable when you press the accelerator, but it handles overtakes very well and is surprisingly easy to drive. The steering is not soft at all, as can happen with some plug-in hybrids; it’s fairly precise though it doesn’t convey much, while the suspension does its job.
In short: it’s a family car, with lots of space, comfortable to drive, that lets you travel many kilometers without consuming fuel and at a reasonable price.
