MG4 EV Urban: Plain, Yet Sufficient
On paper, the MG4 EV Urban’s entry-level model with its modest 43 kWh battery might not look like the best setup for delivering meaningful range. Yet its energy efficiency compensates, much like its 160 hp sibling, making it one of the most economical in its class. It averages about 13.7 kWh per 100 kilometers (roughly 22 kWh per 100 miles), which translates into a practical range of around 320 km (about 199 miles) on average and up to 370 km (about 230 miles) in city driving. In this regard, the competition doesn’t match up.
MG4 EV Urban: Wiser Than the MG4
The Urban doesn’t share the same architecture as the MG4. The MG4 is a rear‑wheel‑drive pure sport sedan, dynamically responsive and well balanced. In the Urban, the front wheels are driven and the character is deliberately “serious.” The steering is precise, chassis motions are controlled, but the handling isn’t as nimble as the MG4. A few jittery moments can appear at very low speeds. MG also trims wheel-and-tire costs, and braking distances suffer a bit as a result.
MG4 EV Urban: Performance That Keeps Pace
The 149‑hp motor in this version, fed by a 43 kWh battery, delivers only about 11 hp less than the range-topping 54 kWh model (which costs roughly €4,500 more) and achieves very similar performance: 0–60 mph in 8.8 seconds versus 9.1 seconds for the 160 hp version, which weighs 90 kg more. This powertrain is more than adequate for everyday driving and offers a refined feel in urban use, but it isn’t confined to city streets. This Urban is also comfortable on longer highways. For a car at such an approachable price, that’s impressive!
MG4 EV Urban: XXL Interior Space
The cabin is understated but thoughtfully finished. A few low-grade plastics pop up here and there, but what truly sets this Urban apart is its space. This compact car, priced like a city car, offers rear legroom that’s unmatched in its class: about 38 cm (roughly 15 inches). That’s 13 cm more than a Peugeot E-308 or the new Nissan Leaf, and 11 cm more than the MG4 “standard.” The cargo area is also generous at 480 liters; only the Citroën ë-C4 X bests it with 560 liters.
MG4 EV Urban: Unbeatable Price…
The base price for this 43 kWh version is €24,995, reduced to €19,990 after the rebate through the end of September. That makes it tough for rivals to match. It also includes features like heated seats, a rear camera, and a heat pump as standard — or at least not available as options on the competition. Its closest rival is the EV Urban with the larger 54 kWh battery, priced at €24,495 after discount. But for everyday use, the entry-level model is the most compelling. For reference, a Peugeot E-308, after subtracting the eco incentives MG doesn’t qualify for, costs at least €37,900 and doesn’t exceed about 320 km of range.
The Auto-Journal verdict: 4/5
This entry-level Urban is a genuine success, aside from its not-quite-perfect sound insulation. But at this price, budget-minded drivers will be thrilled!
