Kimi Antonelli, 20-year-old Mercedes driver, on rivalry with George Russell: “We know we’ll compete and have to fight for track positions”

September 11, 2026

Kimi Antonelli is experiencing a year of vertigo, a whirlwind at 20 years old. The Italian has become the youngest driver to lead the Formula 1 World Championship after wins in China and Japan, and now stars in one of the most talked-about internal battles on the grid alongside his Mercedes teammate, George Russell.

In a recent interview, Antonelli spoke frankly about how he handles that rivalry within the same team: “we know we will compete and that we will have to fight for position on the track,” the Bologna-born driver acknowledged, making clear that he does not intend to hide the sporting tension that exists between them.

Mercedes began 2026 by dominating the early Grands Prix, with Russell taking victory in Australia and Antonelli answering back with two consecutive wins that put him at the front of the standings, igniting a title battle that no one expected so soon in the Italian’s career.

A Teammate Who Is Also His Major Rival

The surge of Antonelli has altered the narrative around the team before the season began. Russell himself started as the undisputed favorite, but on-track results have forced analysts like Martin Brundle to warn that the Briton must treat his teammate as if he were Lewis Hamilton at his best. Antonelli, for his part, has repeated on several occasions that he is eager to test himself against Russell, whom he regards as one of the benchmarks on the current grid.

Before reaching this point, Antonelli had to overcome his own father’s initial resistance, who did not want his son to pursue motor racing. The driver explained that he understands that reluctance because it is a beautiful sport but one that can also be very cruel, a definition that aptly sums up the risks surrounding competition from the youngest categories. His name, Kimi, was born precisely from the family’s admiration for Kimi Räikkönen, a nod that ended up shaping Antonelli’s own career path.

The Italian’s ascent through the lower categories was meteoric and enabled him to arrive at Mercedes as Hamilton’s substitute in 2025, with Wolff backing him despite his young age. Today, leading the World Championship and sharing a garage with Russell, Antonelli faces the challenge of sustaining that level under the pressure of fighting for a title while he continues to grow as a driver, aware that the relationship with his teammate will remain as cordial off the track as it is intense on it.
