The future of Fernando Alonso once again becomes a topic of conversation within Formula 1. As the Spanish driver continues to hint that retirement could come after 2026, voices like Ralf Schumacher argue that the time has come to close the chapter. However, Alonso not only rejects the idea of disappearing soon, but also makes clear that his presence in the paddock will endure even after he stops competing.
Ralf Schumacher’s words lit up the paddock debate. The former German driver asserted that Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton should retire at the end of the 2026 season, arguing that “the time has come” to make room for the next generation, considering that both have lived through a historic era in Formula 1 and that young talents like Oliver Bearman deserve to take those seats.
As for Alonso, the statements carry even more weight because the Spaniard’s contract with Aston Martin Aramco Formula One Team runs out at the end of 2026. At 44 years old, the Asturian remains one of the oldest drivers on the grid, and each season he faces questions about retirement, especially now that the new technical regulations could mark a definitive generational shift within the sport.
Alonso responds and leaves the door open
But Alonso does not seem ready to step away from the car yet. In recent remarks gathered by Sky Sports, the two-time world champion explained that he still feels competitive, motivated and happy behind the wheel. The Spaniard made clear that it will be him who decides when to stop and that, for now, he does not feel that moment has arrived.
He even acknowledged that he will make a definitive decision about his future during 2026, when he has more clarity about Aston Martin’s performance and about how he feels physically.
Beyond whether he continues as a driver, Alonso also uttered a line that fed speculation about his future in the sport: the Spaniard stated that even if he eventually stops competing, people will keep seeing him in the Formula 1 paddock. By doing so, he hinted that his link with Aston Martin or with motor racing could continue in another role, whether as adviser, ambassador, or a key figure within the British team.
The possible farewell in 2027 begins to take shape
Although Alonso avoids directly talking about retirement, his own remarks point to 2026 being the decisive season. The Asturian has explained that he does not want to commit too far ahead and that he will assess whether he maintains the competitive hunger necessary to stay at the top. In other words, he does not rule out racing in 2027, but he also does not guarantee continuing beyond next year.
Some see in Alonso a veteran capable of continuing to make a difference thanks to his experience and talent, while others, like Schumacher, believe the cycle has ended. The only clear thing is that, even when the time comes to hang up the helmet, Fernando Alonso does not seem willing to completely distance himself from the world that has defined his life and where he has left his mark.
