First Drive: Porsche Macan GTS – Can an Electric SUV Be Sporty?

May 7, 2026

You may already know this: the current Porsche Macan lineup is available exclusively as a 100% electric model, at least in Europe.

In Brief

The 2026 Porsche Macan GTS offers a sporty interpretation of the electric SUV, blending power and efficiency across a variety of terrains. With 516 hp, an official WLTP range of up to 586 km (around 364 miles), and rapid charging (10–80% in 21 minutes), it also stands out for its chassis-tuned dynamics and preserved ride comfort. Performance remains high, even on track, thanks to a battery-cooling system designed for sustained sessions. Despite a steep price and numerous options, this model manages to fuse exhilaration with versatility, answering the question of whether an electric SUV can be sporty.

Porsche Macan GTS 516 hp / 100 kWh: 516 horsepower “as base”

That doesn’t stop it from unfolding its range in the brand’s familiar way, with versions 4, 4S, and Turbo—this last badge being a bit incongruous on an electric, but we’ll roll with it! And, as with the rest of the lineup (911, Taycan, Cayenne, Panamera), the Macan wears the GTS badge: positioned just below the Macan Turbo in power, it aims to be more dynamic thanks to chassis-specific tuning. In terms of horsepower, the baseline is 516 hp, and 571 hp in Launch Control mode, just in case the standard setup isn’t quite enough. That yields a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds, according to Porsche, which is 0.5 seconds slower than the Macan Turbo (3.3 s) and its 584 hp (639 hp with Launch Control). Under 4 seconds is still seriously quick. And if you engage Launch Control, you get a real kick in the pants to start off! The grip, courtesy of the all-wheel drive, is impeccable enough to put 955 Nm of torque to the ground without slippage, at least on dry pavement.

Porsche Macan GTS 516 hp / 100 kWh: a push that stays strong

The strength of this Macan also lies in a push that remains vigorous even beyond 180 mph. That’s where many EVs start to fade—either their powertrains sag or manufacturers cap performance to save range. Not Porsche, which allows top speeds up to 155 mph to keep up on the Autobahn. If highway cruising is often a weak point for EVs because it chews through range and charging can be slow, that isn’t the case here. At least when it comes to charging: the 10–80% charge occurs in 21 minutes thanks to the car’s 800-volt architecture, which shares its platform with the Audi Q6. The 95 kWh net battery promises a WLTP range of 586 km; it’s reasonable to expect roughly 186 miles of usable range (10–80% of the battery) on the highway. Another battleground where the battery tends to fade quickly is the track.

Porsche Macan GTS 516 hp / 100 kWh: lighthearted track fun

As an electric SUV, we wouldn’t normally highlight track capability, but Porsche proudly notes that the Macan GTS includes a battery-cooling system that lets you push it on track without the battery cooking itself after a lap, which is the fate of many EVs. Consider yourself reassured. In fact, the battery-cooling system is present on other Macan variants, but here it’s calibrated specifically for this activity. At this point, know that this SUV also offers an Off-Road mode to mix things up after laying down some tarmac. The cooling isn’t the only area where the GTS is upgraded versus the rest of the Macan: it features an air-sprung suspension lowered by 10 mm relative to the rest of the lineup (including the Turbo) and specialized tuning for its suspension and handling. Add Porsche Torque Vectoring as standard and rear-wheel steering as an option (around $2,000) and you get a surprisingly dynamic SUV for its 2.4-ton curb weight. On the back roads of the Nice hinterland, our Macan GTS was particularly precise at the front (aided by well-tuned steering), with minimal roll and a stable rear in fast bends, yet responsive in tight turns when asked.

Porsche Macan GTS 516 hp / 100 kWh: braking isn’t left behind

Even with winter tires that dampen grip and perhaps nudge our exit pace out of tighter corners, the braking isn’t left behind; it’s strong, easy to modulate, and quite durable. Notably, regenerative braking can only be adjusted in two modes, with the milder setting being quite restrained. The shock of how effective this car is comes with a surprising level of comfort. It isn’t as plush as a Citroën C5 Aircross, of course, but the Macan GTS isn’t harsh, it isn’t abrupt, and it remains comfortable enough for longer trips. The driver’s seat is a treat, too, with adjustability for seat tilt, seat length, and lateral support—across the seat and the backrest. These handsome seats are standard, unlike many other options. The list of add-ons is long and expensive. Our test model wore more than €30,000 worth of options, including some almost essential on a car of this type, such as rear-wheel steering. Some options are more about aesthetics, with astonishing levels of personalization. For example, you can choose the stitching color on the grab handles (the overhead handles) for €841. If you want a leather trunk cover, that’s possible for €780… The list goes on, and it’s unlikely your Macan will be identical to your neighbor’s if you start selecting from it. But that’s Porsche, as ever.
