We Tested the MGS6 EV: A Roomy Electric SUV as Spacious as a Living Room, Ditching Subpar Finishes

April 10, 2026

MG is gearing up for a very intense 2026 and 2027 in Europe, as its release schedule is packed with new models. The first to arrive is the MGS6 EV, a 4.71-meter-long electric SUV that becomes the brand’s flagship model.

It is offered with two power levels and a single trim, and besides its spaciousness, it stands out for the quality leap it has made compared to its smaller siblings.

Now on sale with an incredibly comprehensive standard equipment

In its new phase as a Chinese brand under the umbrella of the SAIC group, MG has managed to reclaim a notable place in the Spanish market in less than six years.

The affordable cars have been key to this brand closing 2025 with more sales in our country than heavyweight names like Ford, Citroën, Opel, Skoda or Nissan, but now that MG has achieved good stability in Spain, it aims to go a step further and complement its more budget-friendly models, such as the MG ZS and the MG3, with others that have a much more premium focus.

The best example is the MG Cyberster, a sleek and powerful two-seater convertible that doesn’t aim to be a best-seller like the MG ZS and MG3, but to demonstrate what MG is capable of. In that spirit, the MGS6 EV has just arrived, an all-electric SUV that has become the brand’s flagship in the Asian group.

It also aims to demonstrate MG’s capabilities, like the Cyberster, but it is aimed at a much broader audience, simply because it is far more practical, and also because it offers a better value-for-money proposition. In fact, if we focus on this last point, it is one of the most interesting options in the electric C-SUV segment.

This segment has grown a lot in recent years and continues to do so, so there is increasingly more competition. Aware of this, MG has decided to lean into that good value-for-money to stand out from the others, including the growing number of Chinese models.

Result? A 4.71-meter-long SUV available in two variants: a 4×2 version with 245 hp and a 530 km WLTP range, and a Dual Motor AWD variant with 362 hp and 485 hp, both offered with a single trim and a starting price (MSRP) of 43,655 euros and 46,655 euros, respectively.

With the Cyberster mentioned above, the MGS6 EV becomes the brand’s most expensive model. In return, it steps forward in many respects compared to its siblings, and the first thing you notice is the quality department.

On the outside, it follows the design language of MG’s latest launches and, although it is large and has presence, it does not give the impression of being more premium than its smaller siblings. Inside, however, it is evident that it is better built and that MG has pulled up its socks.

The design is similar to that of the MGS5 EV: minimalist and fully digitized, as current trends dictate, but without giving up physical buttons (kudos to MG), making it a car that’s easier to understand and use than some rivals where everything is done through the screen.

That said, the two displays it uses are enormous: the instrument cluster is 10.25 inches and the central touchscreen is 12.8 inches. It’s also the first MG with a Head-Up Display and uses a well-executed multimedia system, with a clear and intuitive design, good connectivity, smooth operation, and very useful features.

Among these features is the ability to load a pre-configured profile that can be customized to switch on and off the desired ADAS — such as lane-keeping assist or speed-limit warnings — and to activate this profile you simply swipe down on the screen and select it.

But it has long been clear that China can produce cars with a very high level of technology and connectivity, and MG is no exception.

What is most striking is the overall interior quality of the MGS6 EV. By miles, it is the MG with the best interior craftsmanship, using high-quality materials, excellent fit and finish, and meticulous attention to detail, to the point that it doesn’t have much to envy from higher-premium and more expensive rivals.

When, a few years ago, people wanted to show off a car, the most common thing was to boast about low consumption, power, or extras. Today, that’s not the case. Technology has taken center stage. But it isn’t always where you’d expect, rather in places far less obvious.

What stands out the most is just how spacious it is. Yes, there are SUVs with more interior space, but they are much larger on the outside. The MGS6 EV isn’t the biggest SUV in its segment from the outside, but it makes excellent use of interior room, perhaps the best, even surpassing the Tesla Model Y, which has very generous rear seating.

The rear section of the MGS6 EV literally feels like a lounge because there is ample space in every dimension, especially legroom. If you need to install a child seat, you won’t have any trouble, and if you’re planning trips with quite tall adults in the back, there will also be no issues.

Neither will you have trouble loading it because the trunk offers 674 liters of capacity and a clean design, making it highly usable. If, on the unlikely chance you need more, there’s a front trunk under the hood adding 124 liters in the 4×2 and 102 liters in the 4×4: enough for more than just carrying charging cables.

In terms of equipment, ride comfort, practicality, and cargo space, it is a perfect family car. The question is whether it shares the same Achilles heel as other EVs in its segment: insufficient range to be the main or only car for the household when traveling.

MGS6 EV: how it goes

Since the initial test drive was brief, I can’t draw final conclusions about consumption and range, but on paper it seems perfectly capable for long trips, especially in the 4×2 version which features a 77 kWh NCM battery (74.3 kWh net) that theoretically enables up to 530 km in the WLTP combined cycle on a single charge, aided by a claimed average consumption of 16.6 kWh/100 km.

When it comes to charging, the AC power is up to 11 kW and DC can reach up to 144 kW. It’s not bad, because in this latter case the battery goes from 10% to 80% in 38 minutes, but there’s room for improvement, especially when compared with some rivals like the XPeng G6, which can charge at over 400 kW DC.

The all-wheel-drive variant uses the same battery, but isn’t as economical because it is more powerful (362 HP instead of 245 HP) and has two motors instead of one, which means more weight, so the official consumption rises to 18.1 kWh/100 km and the combined range drops to 485 km.

In return, the AWD is faster and, surprising as it may seem, this car can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.1 seconds. It moves with great assurance and, although the tuning is fully oriented toward comfort, push the accelerator a bit and the 362 HP come into play, pushing you into the seat.

Clearly, that helps when overtaking or merging onto a highway, but this isn’t a car that invites you to race, precisely because its setup prioritizes comfort.

The suspension is soft, the steering is heavily assisted and not very communicative, the brake pedal has a feel that requires a period of adaptation (you need to press it properly for it to bite), and the response of the two motors isn’t as instantaneous as in other electric models. You know you have plenty of power for any situation, which is reassuring, but you don’t feel like driving with a knife between your teeth; you drive relaxed.

The 4×2 version, with 245 HP, isn’t slow either, accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in a respectable 7.3 seconds. Since it also handles well, but is more economical and offers greater range, I find it the most compelling option in the lineup, unless you absolutely need 4×4 traction. It also has a bit more front trunk capacity and, above all, it costs less than the AWD while sharing the same equipment.

Price of the MGS6 EV

The starting price of the MGS6 EV Long Range 4×2 is 45,990 euros, but with all MG discounts and the Government’s Auto+ plan it drops to 37,789 euros. The MGS6 EV Dual Motor AWD starts at 48,990 euros and rests at 40,789 euros after discounts and incentives.

Among the targets for the MGS6 EV is the category king, the Tesla Model Y, but also others such as the XPeng G6, the Skoda Enyaq, the Volkswagen ID.4, or the BYD Seal U electric.
