1930 Alfa Romeo 1750GS Testa Fissa 4

Amelia Island 2017 – 1930 Alfa Romeo 1750GS Testa Fissa [27 Photo]

Here is a stunning racer that stands proud even in a line of million-dollar one-offs at Amelia Island Concours 2017. What really spoke to us about this Alfa Romeo is its artful, graceful and yet quite serious racing bodywork.  The chassis is fully shrouded for aero smoothness — right down to the louvered frame section down below, covered arrow steel for the front suspension, and teardrop tail with zero shutlines.  It is basically a one-piece clamshell for most of the metal!  Even the windshield is a nice flip of metalwork. Quite special in the flesh.  This car raced extensively in …

1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Torpedo Sports by Barker 1

RM Arizona 2016 – 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Torpedo Sports by Barker

What a lovely theme running through the auction list of RM Sotheby’s Arizona sale — happening today the 29th of January. Boat-tail roadsters from the 1930s are certainly a niche genre — but one that has significant value. Their rarity and beauty and hand-made nature makes these shapes all the more special. The shrouded rear fenders of this Phantom Torpedo are definitely something to write home about. The ultra-tall tires make the design flourish extra complex — but lead to a gorgeous trunkline design as a result.  A tall teardrop element forms the upper edge of the Torpedo’s tail — …

Racing Icons – 1954 Mercedes-Benz ‘Blue Wonder’ Race Transporter in 69 RARE Photos

Part publicity stunt, part engineering exercise — and all fun and playful. The 1950s Mercedes-Benz Racing Division needed a rapid transport vehicle to supplement the big trucks with closed canopies that typically moved racecars and teams among the European circuits. Lower, faster and far more nimble than the big trucks, the Blue Wonder could navigate under any bridge or within any narrow city streets — areas typically off-limits for a heavy heauler. Powered by a race-ready engine from the 300SL and plopped into Mercedes sedan chassis, the ‘Blue Wonder’ was billed as the fastest transporter in the world. A top …

RM Amelia Island 2015 Preview – 1930 Bentley Blue Train Is Reborn!

Part mystery, part fantasy – but all legend! The Blue Train Bentley is back with this just-finished recreation of one of the most legendary Flying B’s ever made. As the official RM write-up below charts, the car was created the beat one of the quickest trains on a route to France. This might seem easy today, with six-lane motorways throughout the world and pavement allowing high-speed progress for even the most unskilled drivers. But in the 1930s, the idea of averaging more than 90-mph in a car, across long distances, was pure fantasy and hyperbole. Like something right out of …

1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Shooting Brake

RM Arizona 2015 Preview – 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Shooting Brake

There is something sublimely humble and useful about a Rolls-Royce Shooting Brake woody. The proportions are all about decadent luxury, with a huge dash of usefulness in the giant trunk making this a true grand tourer — in a family-plus-dogs-plus-luggage sense! So why a woody Rolls? The wood cabin and wagon shape meant it was possible to make just a few examples – and skip the huge metal stamping investments that a steel cabin would require. The low and lean style of this ultra-long Phantom II Shooting Brake defined elegant family travel for many decades to come. 1930 Rolls-Royce Phantom …
