Hyundai Unveils Kona EV, Promises 292 Miles Of Driving Range [Video]

Hyundai’s Kona CUV has already made waves since it was introduced a year ago. While it has not set its wheels on U.S. shores as of yet, the Kona has proven to be a popular choice for international buyers. Naturally, Hyundai wants to maintain this momentum, and has unveiled the next iteration of Kona, the Kona Electric. The exterior styling of the Kona Electric is largely unchanged from the standard Kona, and as a result the majority of the funky lines remain intact. However, there are several minor tweaks that are designed to help the Kona Electric stand out from the rest of its peers. Model exclusive 17-inch alloy wheels help give it a distinctive look, while the closed off front grille improves aerodynamics, and also serves as the biggest indicator of what lurks underneath. The front bumper has also been tweaked, and Hyundai engineers have enhanced aerodynamics even further …

Road Test Review – 2017 Volkswagen e-Golf – By Carl Malek

When the e-Golf first arrived on our shores back in 2014, it was considered an afterthought especially considering that it arrived during the pinnacle of Volkswagen’s TDI-fueled dominance of the green car market. But with this diesel empire toppled by scandal, and a growing field of electric vehicles entering the marketplace, the e-Golf’s role in Volkswagen’s arsenal has become much more important. Can this electrified Golf stand out against the competition while still retaining the VW’s winning formula? At first glance, the exterior styling does not scream that your driving an electric car. In fact, it looks like a run of the mill Volkswagen Golf, right down to its fake exhaust inlets and hatchback proportions. Whereas other EV offerings are all about drawing attention to their owner, the VW is all about fitting in, and that may please buyers that prefer a more subtle wrapper for their gas beating purchase. …

Update1 – 2017 Lamborghini Terzo Millennio

Updated with high-res photos. Lambo just whipped the wraps off the newest, hottest Lambo yet: the Terzo Millennio.  This third wave hypercar aims to make electric exotic.  And make it sexy. Tough ask! The new Lambo TM aims to revolutionize materials and packaging to go even more mid-engined than Aventador or Centenario.  Cab farther forward.  More extreme rakes to all glass.  And extreme aero taking more precedence than beauty.  We see Lambo’s wild pipedream of what their flagship might be in 2025. Only fairly lousy images and no tech specs available yet.  Watch this space for better materials when available. Until then, here are some live Insta’s from the reveal at MIT in Cambridge, Mass.   The future starts today. We unveiled #Lamborghini Terzo Millennio at #EmTech 2017. Our concept for the future of super sports cars, bringing together Lamborghini and MIT. Don’t miss it! #TerzoMillennio A post shared by …

Electric or Hybrid, Which Is Indeed The Superior Green Option?

Remember back when gasoline (and to a lesser extent) diesel engines, were once the sole choices for U.S. drivers looking to buy an automobile for their driveway? We sure do, and we also remember back when the idea of electric let alone hybrid offerings were mere science experiments that existed in the world of concept cars. Fast forward a few decades, and this established order has been toppled by a strong pool of hybrid vehicles, as well as the emergence of a new wave of all electric offerings. But which choice is better for consumers? And which choice will stand out from the rest of the pack in the long haul?     To find out we focused on a vehicle that currently offers buyers both options, the 2017 Hyundai Ioniq. When we last met the spunky Ioniq, it was in its all electric form, and we had the chance …

Designer Showcase – N.01 Autonomous Race Car Concept By Fernando Pastre Fertonani

Gorgeous new designs out of Brazil this week from Fernando Fertonani! This fresh Masters in Transportation Design SPD Milan grad has penned out a look a driverless endurance racecar of the future. Imagine this as an LMP1 competitor and its rigid bodysides, shrouded front axle and massive wings make beautiful sense.  The open rear tires with central drive system appear to be designed for cooling – wrapped in blocky linear wings that form bodywork and tail stabilizers.  Massive electric motors inside each wheel hub reinforce the thrust this is designed to handle. Instead of a tall cockpit area and mid-mounted motor out back, the N.01 stays Ultra low for its midsection.  The flatpack skateboard of energy storage is similar to Teslas and is largely feasible for low-volume production.  A central hump element houses the mainframe CPUs that keep this racer humming.  Notably absent?  Sensors and cameras and laser arrays typical …

2017 Renault SYMBIOZ Concept Car (and House!) – Holistic 2030 Nature-Mobile

You know we love a good Renault concept around here.  They generally present a future design language on a wild, unrealistic bodystyle. But the advent of electric cars can be really freeing.  SYMBIOZ envisions a car that perfectly fits into its environment and makes a showpiece of everything that passes by these glass windows and roof.  The flatpack battery is Tesla-style and lets the front end be cut to nothing, the overall height radically low and the width stretched to the extreme.  Advanced ultra-strong materials mean SYMBIOZ can pass crash tests even without typical crumple zones.  And with all the self-driving safety tech, blind spots are not a worry.  Why not block out that angle with a chunky D-pillar as the only roof section that is not clear.  The rest of the machine is open and one with the sight of nature, if not the wind.  The appearance of a …

Situation Analysis: Can 2017 i Vision Dynamics Concept Save BMW?

Sometimes I just want to shake BMW like a British nanny. What are you thinking, bad BMW baby!!!!? The X7 Concept, Z4 Concept and 8 Series concepts are all fairly new design ideas for the IAA BMW stand in Frankfurt this year.  A new M5 and X3 are the production cars with some fresh excitement around them.  A new BMW i3S looks slightly less hideous from the front and will be quicker than the base model.  None of these models is the silver bullet BMW needs to get back to brand health.  And sales growth. The X7’s design is shockingly unpleasant.  The giant new grille appears to be a core BMW design theme moving forward — and let’s hope it gets better looking over time.  If not, the hard downward trajectory of the brand’s sales is likely to accelerate.  What do we mean?  Well, 7 series is at about half …

2017 Jaguar Future-Type Concept + E-Type ZERO Revealed

By now you have surely read that JLR is electirifying all its 2020-and-beyond car launches.  This makes sense with the latest hybrid tech that makes a e-assist as easy as a jumbo torque-converter for the the autoboxes. Jaguar is clearly going well beyond that level for its future plans, however.  To a full EV and fully autonomous future. So we have a pair of concepts to show their EV motivation: one a remake and one a wild future vision. The E-Type Zero is perhaps more enticing for its rear-drive layout and maintained weight distribtion.  Apparently the EV pack is around the same size and eight as the E-Type Series 1.5’s straight six engine. Jag promises near-silent 0-60-mph in juust 5.5 seconds.  So, well off the pace of most Tesla’s to date.  But far quicker than most EVs and hybrids. The FT Future-Type concept takes a look at a 2040 commuter …
