1971 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI Cabriolet by Frua

We have hilarious convertibles on the brain since shooting a giggly 500C review video today. What is sillier or more absurd as a ragtop than a four-door Rolls-Royce Phantom! This 1971 All-Weather Cabriolet by Frua is famously special.  One-off design details and executions extend far beyond the giant cashmere roof.  This car has basically no miles and is as-new condition, so perhaps not the ideal beach car from the RR. But certainly one that would delight anyone in the Hamptons or other luxury seaside enclaves. This beaut sold for $390k at RM Sotheby’s Monterey 2017 auctions the other week. 1971 Rolls-Royce Phantom VI All-Weather Cabriolet by Frua You May Also Like:MANSORY Rolls-Royce Phantom Limo and Phantom Drophead Coupe Are 7.5L, V12TT Purebreds   In honor of the Monterey and Pebble Beach Concours week – here is the first in a series of showcases of Ultra-High-Net-Worth vehicles from which to choose. …

F70! 2017 Ferrari 70 Anni Collection at Pebble Beach Concours [150 photos]

Ferrari made a huge splash with new cars at this year’s Pebble Beach Concours.  There were LaFerrari Apertas underfoot at almost every step.  None more special perhaps than this one-off Tailor Made model for the 70th anniversary collection. This set of specialized cars included the soft-top LaFerrari, 488 Spider and F12 Berlinetta.  Each with personalized details and F70 badges on the flanks. Sitting nearby were many of the inspiration liveries for this F70 collection.  All-stars include many Testa Rossas and a dozen significant 250’s.  Favorites include the 250 California bodystyle of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off fame and the vented, beastly 250GT Competizione.  The 400 Aerodinamico in black here is also a rare sight. One of the details captured here by photographer James Crabtree is true Ferrari life: a honeybee who could not get enough of the Fly Yellow 488. 2017 Ferrari 70 Anni LaFerrari Aperta 2017 Ferrari 70 Anni 488 …

Concept Flashback – 1965 GT40 Roadster Prototype

Meet the Original 1964 Ford GT40 Concept and 1965 GT40 Roadster Prototype 11

The GT40 was actually a pretty derivative design – with a chassis and overall structure partially borrowed from Lola. But the GT40 as it came from Lola was not a winner right away. While the Mark I GT40 is a bit more pure, and a lot more beautiful by many eyes — it was not a race-winner. The GT40 started winning races with the Mark II GT40 with its huge air scoops, front sill spats, and other aero mutations to the overall design. But still – it is hard to argue with the clean beauty of these initial concept prototypes. The GT40 roadster readied the platform for potential open-air race series.  It also made the exotic, LMP1-style design seem possible for a road car.  Or at least one for private billionaires to enjoy on track days? Indeed, a few were made just for that. 1964 Ford GT40 Concept     …

Concept Flashback – 1978 Jaguar XJ Spider by Pininfarina

Concept Flashback - 1978 JAGUAR XJ Spider by Pininfarina 3

How advanced is this Pininfarina concept for Jaguar? It is hard to believe there is an XK under these swoopy panels, which predated anything else curvy by more than eight years. Of course, Jaguar had been rocking serious curves since the 1940s.  This Pininfarina exercise re-introduced a swoopy, flowing shape that was markedly different from the boxy production XK. Very, very impressive level of production value for a 1978 concept.  Although not adapted for sale, some vindication for the designers came when this basic surfacing template was a huge hit for the Aston Martin DB7 and even the Jaguar XK from 1996. Dozens of other cars would adopt the plastic nose-cone and beat the idea to death via the Pontiac Firebird and even Chevrolet Corvette.   1978 JAGUAR XJ Spider by Pininfarina You May Also Like:Concept Flashback – 1978 JAGUAR XJ Spider by Pininfarina How advanced is this Pininfarina concept …

ALFA-ROMEO Wine & Cheese at Folktale Winery – Monterey Car Week 2017

Does Pebble Beach feel like eons ago?  Less than a week since $300-million in cars were sold at auction.  And about the same value of collectibles driving all around town. Alfa Romeo had a strong presence at 2017 Monterey Car Week.  Always a favorite on the lawn on Sunday, the brand is now heavily promoting their new Stelvio SUV and Giulia sport sedan. Both have pricing from about $50k and look a million times more special than their BMW rivals. Here are a few dozen of our favorite Alfa Romeos from Pebble Beach and beyond.  Special access to a Stelvio clay model in the barrel room of Folktale Winery is a special treat!   Alfa brought the very rare and very special TZ2 out for some time in the sun beside the 4C Spider. Thanks to James Crabtree for the photos. ALFA-ROMEO – Monterey Car Week 2017 You May Also …

Concept Flashback – 2006 RINSPEED ZaZen is Bubble Hard 911

Concept Flashback - 2006 RINSPEED ZaZen is Porsche 911 with Clear Bubble Hardtop 54

This concept from RINSPEED in 2006 is actually quite magnificent. A clear polycarbonate hardtop and a variety of innovative supplier solutions round out what is a very intriguing concept car from RINSPEED. The rear fenders and nose treatment with Ferrari 612 lighting elements are very interesting, but the RINSPEED ZaZen is absolutely hideous from the pure nose and tail angles. An unusual and sloppy mess of amateurish block shapes. Other lighting by the huge list of experimental parts suppliers are more special.  Diamond-cut glass for the brake lights is intricate, beautiful and very special.  The LED laserlight CHMSL is notably prescient in 2017 and beyond. 2006 RINSPEED ZaZen   Rinspeed “zaZen” Rinspeed and Bayer MaterialScience jointly develop new concept car “zaZen” – Automotive enlightenment on four wheels – Revolutionary lighting technique and transparent hardtop at the Geneva Motor Show February 28, 2006, will mark the world premiere at the Geneva …

2017 Pagani Zonda HP Barchetta – Pebble Beach Debut

It has a name!  We knew this car was special on sight.  Next to the Huayra BC and Huayra Roadster… the Barchetta only somewhat fits in. This is a more brutal, hard-edged design in the front and rear.  Zonda lights also look like nothing else. Yet what is this?  Chopped windshield glass?  Snorkel intake and BC-like tall wing?!  Did we render something like this last summer?  [Yes=] And the coup de grace?  Shrouded rear wheels and extreme underbody aero and rear splitter.  Stunning. Here is Huayra Roadster in front of Barchetta, plus Zonda Cinque which is similar apart from the windshield. The HP Barchetta is just a three-unit special.  Stay tuned for more details on its specs and pricing when available.  We’re lucky to have in-person photos of this beautiful beast via the Pebble Beach Concours concept lawn.
