In Brief
The Opel Corsa GSE 281 hp / 54 kWh embodies the bold revival of urban electric cars, featuring high power, a deeply revised chassis, and a clearly assertive handling. In pure performance, it competes with the sport benchmarks of the moment thanks to its powerful motor and the numerous optimizations brought to it. Despite its road efficiency and its well-equipped package, the Corsa GSE trades a bit of comfort and range. Its high price may deter some buyers, even though a substantial discount and the eco bonus help soften the bill.
The gradual and planned phase-out of internal-combustion engines makes room for a new category of “pocket rockets” with a strong personality, in zero-emission form. The Mini stands out with the John Cooper Works E version at 258 hp. Since this summer, Cupra Raval has joined the fray. With 226 hp, it targets the Alpine A290 (220 hp), the national flagship in this segment. The French contender remains the sole small French sports car for now, while we await the imminent release of the E-208 GTi planned for this fall and a technical cousin of today’s Corsa GSE. These two also share many elements with other Stellantis group members: notably the Alfa Romeo Junior Elettrica Veloce and the Lancia Ypsilon HF (launched last year). All four feature an electric motor of 281 hp, powered by a 54 kWh gross-capacity battery (51 kWh net). Attributes that spice up driving…
Opel Corsa GSE 281 hp / 54 kWh: 0-60 mph in 5.5 seconds
The Opel catapults from 0 to 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and reaches 111 mph (180 km/h) on track. The high torque of 345 Nm, immediately available as with all electric vehicles, makes the accelerations punchy enough to pin you to the back of the seat. In corners, the Corsa GSE reveals all of its talents. Precision in its lines, it demonstrates commendable efficiency. Even at higher speeds, the German hatch remains disciplined. Only driving enthusiasts will miss the lack of steering feel, though it’s been calibrated specifically, and the rear end isn’t as lively when you lift off in corners. They will nevertheless appreciate the excellent body control through swift direction changes. To achieve this result and effectively transfer the 281 hp to the road, the little Opel underwent significant changes. Compared with a standard Corsa Electric variant offering 136 or 156 hp, the GSE features a sport chassis lowered by 26 mm at the front and 11 mm at the rear, with widened tracks. The anti-roll bars are thicker, and the hydraulic bump stops have been specially developed for this version. Finally, the presence of a Torsen-type limited-slip differential gives the impression of skating on rails in tight bends. Nice! Provided you don’t let yourself get carried away for too long by the performance.
Opel Corsa GSE 281 hp / 54 kWh: optimized for high performance, it sacrifices comfort
In Sport mode, with maximum power and torque, the battery range melts away like snow in the sun. To stretch the range, it’s better to select Normal mode. In this configuration, peak power drops to 231 hp, and it can even be as low as 190 hp in Eco mode. But even with the car thus throttled, the advertised 374 km of range is a tall order. In reality, don’t expect more than about 300 km. And even then, one can use the B-mode on the gear selector to activate regenerative braking on deceleration. On the braking side, the oversized 355 mm front discs, pinched by four-piston calipers, bring the car to a quick stop when needed. Simply slowing it down at the entrance to a corner, the good pedal feedback helps modulate the pressure. Optimized for higher efficiency and performance, the Corsa GSE loses a bit of ride comfort. The 18-inch wheels standard with wide low-profile tires (215/40 R18) reinforce this impression of stiffness over road irregularities. A prematurely approached speed bump is felt and heard as a short, sharp clack from the suspension.
Opel Corsa GSE 281 hp / 54 kWh: generous lateral supports
Fortunately, the comfortable upholstery helps absorb some of the impacts to preserve passenger well-being. In the rear, passengers will more keenly notice the cramped legroom and the sense of confinement created by the integrated head restraints in the “Performance” sport seats’ imposing backs. Equipped with generous lateral bolsters, they hold the driver and passenger firmly in the corners. The black, gray, and yellow checkered trim completes the ambiance just as the aluminum pedal and the on-board computer readouts—such as a G-Force gauge, temperature, and battery power—enhance the experience. Outside, the redesigned bumpers, the small air diffuser, and the 18-inch wheels make the GSE stand out at a glance from the more reserved sibling models. This clearly sporty version is priced about €4,000 less than its direct rivals after an 11% launch discount and the ecological bonus.

Auto-Journal verdict: 4/5
The GSE presentation makes an impact. The Corsa proves to be fast and enjoyable to drive. It’s a pity that the limited range shortens the pleasure for longer sessions. As a result, practicality remains limited and comes at a price, even though Opel offers a generous launch discount!
