Volkswagen, Audi, SEAT and Skoda Recall Nearly 3 Million Cars Worldwide Over Steering Issue

September 28, 2026

Recalls are the daily bread of the automotive industry, although those affecting a large number of models worldwide are less common. In this case, the mass recall includes several brands of the Volkswagen Group, specifically a total of 2.86 million vehicles, although some outlets indicate the number could reach 4 million.

Affects vehicles Audi, SEAT, Skoda, and Volkswagen, specifically the steering system. We spoke with the Volkswagen Group and this is what they told us.

The Potential Issue: Road Salt on German Roads

The German consortium has decided to recall nearly 3 million vehicles to undertake the replacement of a mounting bolt that, under certain humidity and corrosion conditions, could lead to a loss of steering.

The affected vehicles are the following models:

  • Volkswagen Tiguan, Touran, Golf, Golf Variant and Caddy manufactured between September 2013 and July 2024.
  • Audi Q3 manufactured between October 2017 and May 2024.
  • SEAT Ateca and Tarraco manufactured between April 2016 and September 2024.

The repair is free but requires a visit to the workshop so that that potentially defective bolt is replaced by a more corrosion-resistant one. According to data from the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, of the 2.86 million vehicles recalled, 2.15 million are Volkswagen models and half were sold in Germany.
