A large SUV that unfolds into a mini camper living room for under €40,000: the idea is surprising. An electric pop-up roof, two sleeping berths, floor heating, and an integrated cinema screen—all packed into a family-friendly vehicle over five meters long.
This model is already on sale in China and carries a Europe-bound name that is still under wraps: Xiaomi SkyNomad N90 Max. Unveiled earlier this September on its home market, the SkyNomad lineup includes several variants of this oversized luxury SUV. The most spectacular, called N90 Max Explorer Edition in China and N90 Max Studio by some international outlets, adds an factory-integrated pop-up roof and a genuine sleeping space. Under the 5.29-meter-long body, Xiaomi installs an electrical architecture with a range extender. The package claims up to 1,705 km of combined range according to the Chinese CLTC cycle. That makes this SUV a potential boondocking companion, but what does it actually offer when stacked up against a traditional motorhome?
A Large Xiaomi SUV That Unfolds into a Mini Camper
Unlike aftermarket roof tents, the electric pop-up roof of this SkyNomad N90 Max is factory-integrated. An integrated module that adds roughly 10 cm to the exterior height, while preserving an announced drag coefficient of 0.245. Once the vehicle is parked, the roof deploys electrically in about thirty seconds. The cabin then transforms into a two-level space. The interior height can reach around 2.29 m (approximately 7.5 feet), allowing you to stand up without bumping your head. The mechanism only works when stationary and off the public road.
In the upper section, the roof forms a mezzanine-like area of roughly 2 m² that can support up to 200 kg. There you find a mattress measuring 2 m by 1 m, integrated lighting, and a charging outlet. Just below, the second row of seats folds electronically in a 40/60 split. That configuration creates a bed measuring 1.87 m by 1.24 m without removing the seats. The aluminum-slab floor with wood-look finish incorporates three levels of underfloor heating. The temperature can reach up to 38°C, bringing this SUV even closer to a compact boondocking camper. In the N90 lineup, the arrangement can accommodate seven seats in a 2+2+3 layout. When all seats are folded, the stated trunk volume climbs to 1,831 liters (about 65 cubic feet).
Camper Equipment, Range-Extending Hybrid, and a Sub-€40,000 Price
In “stoppage” mode, the interior of this camper SUV nearly becomes a living room. The second row folds electronically at the press of a button to create the lower bed. The manufacturer states the operation takes about thirty seconds. The front seats can fully swivel to face the rear, creating a true living space. Xiaomi has also included a built‑in 30-inch projector, turning the rear area into a mini cinema when the vehicle is parked. The HyperOS infotainment system can manage up to six screens aboard. There’s also a compressor refrigerator of 9 liters and a 25‑speaker audio system. Once the rear bed is deployed, there is, however, little room left for luggage, underscoring a use case focused on stops rather than long moves.
Under the floor, the SkyNomad N90 Max employs a range-extender electrical system. A 1.5-liter turbo gasoline engine delivering 152 hp serves as a generator to power a 76 kWh NCM battery. Propulsion is handled by two electric motors with a four‑wheel‑drive setup. Total output reaches about 310 kW (roughly 422 hp), with around 286 hp on the front axle and 136 hp on the rear. The package claims up to 464 km of pure electric range according to the CLTC cycle. The overall range is listed as 1,705 km, or 1,688 km for the Explorer Edition. Rapid charging reportedly recovers around 285 km of range in 15 minutes. The two N90 Max variants are listed with a 0–100 km/h time of 5.9 seconds. The suspension blends air springs with continuously adjustable dampers to maintain comfort. In China, the N90 lineup starts at 259,900 yuan (about €33,500) for the base model. The N90 Max with the pop-up roof is priced at 299,900 yuan (about €38,700). So, it stays well below the symbolic €40,000 threshold for this two-story, big SUV. Deliveries of the N90 Max and the Explorer Edition are planned for November to December 2026 on the Chinese market. For now, Xiaomi has not announced any plan to sell this SkyNomad outside China. Yet the company already hints at European ambitions, with a possible arrival in Germany in early 2027. France would follow a few months later, with other models like the SU7 sedan or the YU7 SUV in the lead‑in roles. The question remains whether this pop-up-roof SUV will ever cross borders beyond China.
