To the most veteran followers of Formula 1, the name Paul Monaghan will ring a bell. He was Fernando Alonso’s race engineer at Renault, accompanying him on his first victory in Hungary in 2003. Now Aston Martin wanted to reunite Monaghan with Alonso and offered the British engineer the chance to leave Red Bull. He will do so, but not to go to Aston Martin.
Monaghan will leave Red Bull after 21 years, joining the long list of departures from the energy drinks team. But he has decided not to accept Aston Martin’s offer. Instead, Monaghan will sign with Cadillac, where they offered him a position practically identical to the one at Aston Martin, but the Cadillac offer convinced him more.
Paul Monaghan rejects Aston Martin to sign for Cadillac
Paul Monaghan is one of Formula 1’s most respected technicians. 21 years as Red Bull’s chief engineer back him up. The British engineer had been with the team since its founding in 2005, but he has decided to bring his Red Bull journey to an end, following in the footsteps of other veterans of the team such as Christian Horner, Adrian Newey or Jonathan Wheatley.
Aston Martin was aware of Monaghan’s situation and had offered him to lead the team’s engineering department, according to RacingNews365. However, Monaghan has decided to reject Aston Martin’s offer, and the most painful part is the reason: he has accepted a Cadillac offer in the same position.
Aston Martin and Cadillac are now the two worst teams in Formula 1, fighting to avoid being the wooden spoon of the world championship. But it seems Monaghan was more convinced by Cadillac’s offer than by Aston Martin’s, whether due to the monetary amount or the sporting project. Perhaps at Cadillac there is less crowding of names and more room to shine.
The curious thing is that Monaghan and Alonso already know each other very well, since the British engineer was the one in charge of guiding Alonso’s radio messages during his early years at Renault, where together they achieved the first victory in Hungary in 2003. Moreover, Monaghan also worked at McLaren in the ’90s, coinciding with Ayrton Senna, and had a brief spell at Jordan.
It is understood that now Monaghan, aged 58, will have to pass through a waiting period at Red Bull before he can join Cadillac. In fact, the earliest estimate is that Monaghan could start working for Cadillac in the spring of 2027, unless the teams reach a prior financial agreement.
As for Aston Martin, they will need to improve their offers or their project if they want to attract Formula 1’s engineering talent.
