Farewell to Range Anxiety: 90% of Spain’s Roads Now Have Fast Charging Within 60 km

July 1, 2026

The network of rapid charging for electric cars is often cited as one of the main barriers to adopting electric vehicles, with price and range being the other two drawbacks. However, “in Spain nine out of ten kilometers on the main road network already have a charging point of at least 100 kW within 60 kilometers,” according to the Secretary of State for Energy, Joan Groizard, during the opening of Electric Vehicle in Motion (VEM), held at Madrid Río.

Thus, for the Government, Spain already meets the European standard regarding distance, but not yet in terms of the minimum required power on a generalized basis. However, in reality distance is not yet fully compliant either. There is still a path ahead.

A charging point of at least 100 kW within 60 kilometers of a highway

The AFIR standard requires that by 2030 there be charging points of at least 150 kW every 60 kilometers on the EU’s main routes. The problem is that, according to the secretary of state, 90% of the kilometers of the main road network already have access to a charging point of at least 100 kW within a 60-kilometer radius. In other words, there isn’t a charger every 60 km on the highway; rather, the one that exists may be in a town 50 km from the highway. It is an improvement, but not what Europe demands.

As of June 1, 2026, Spain counted 56,181 public charging points, up 12.36% from 2025. The so-called fast chargers, with a power range of 50 to 150 kW, totaled more than 12,100 units, with growth close to 21% so far this year. Ultra-fast chargers, above 350 kW, rose from 742 to 864 units.

The key instrument for increasing power and the number of chargers has been the Moves Corredores program, whose first call has just been resolved. Of the 200 million euros budgeted, a little over 97 million will fund 337 projects for installations of at least 150 kW.

The remainder, about 102 million, will be added to another 100 million already announced to launch a second call, presumably in 2027. In total, 200 million additional euros with which the Government hopes to close the gaps that persist, especially in the so-called shadow zones, those lacking prior infrastructure where the first call prioritized action.

In his speech at the VEM, Groizard used the same language that immortalized Teresa Ribera, today the executive vice-president of the European Commission, when in 2018 she stated that diesel had its days numbered. Now, “the charging excuse has its days numbered,” asserted the secretary of state. “Spain has more charging stations than gas stations, with more than 55,000 points.”

Spain has more charging points installed than the total number of petrol stations in the country, but the question now is no longer whether charging points exist, but whether they have the power, reliability, and territorial distribution needed to support a growing electric fleet.
