In Brief
A spectacular fireworks display erupted on I-75 near Chattanooga when a trailer carrying fireworks caught fire. The incident, fortunately with no injuries, highlighted significant gaps in compliance with rules governing the transport of hazardous materials. Authorities shut down traffic in both directions to secure the area during the emergency response. Investigators confirmed a complete lack of adherence to regulations by the convoys involved. This event serves as a stark reminder of the risks tied to transporting pyrotechnic materials without proper compliance.
Stuck on the highway, motorists in Tennessee witnessed a genuine fireworks show. Without paying for admission. A lone trailer loaded with fireworks morphed a routine slowdown into an unexpected spectacle after catching fire. The highway suddenly transformed into a stage fit for an early Fourth of July celebration. And behind the spectacle lay a transportation incident that could have ended far worse.
The events unfolded on the Interstate 75, north of Chattanooga. The incident occurred near the Ooltewah exit on a Saturday night. A pickup truck pulling a closed trailer full of fireworks had the load ignite while in motion. Rockets shot out in all directions. Authorities halted traffic in both directions. Filmed from multiple angles by bystanders, the scene circulated online. But for the driver and other road users, this “free” pyrotechnics show raises a serious question about how such cargo is transported.
On Interstate 75, a fireworks trailer becomes a show
According to several American outlets, including Jalopnik, which cites NBC News, it all began with a fire in a closed trailer. It was traveling on the northbound lanes of I-75, just past the Ooltewah exit in Hamilton County. The trailer held several fireworks that ignited one after another. For motorists stranded nearby, the sky lit up with multicolored rockets, while the hull of the trailer continued to burn. The driver of the towing vehicle, unnamed in reports, managed to pull over and withdraw safely, with no injuries.
The Chattanooga Fire Department, the Tri-Community Volunteer Fire Department, and law enforcement were quickly dispatched to the scene. “Saturday night, Chattanooga firefighters, Tri-Comm and law enforcement responded to a vehicle fire on northbound I-75 after the Ooltewah exit. Fireworks exploded in all directions, endangering motorists. Traffic was halted in both directions while the firefighters extinguished the blaze. There were no injuries,” the Chattanooga Fire Department said, as reported by Jalopnik. Crews kept their distance until the bursts ceased before moving in to tackle the fire.
