Stellantis Plans Several Compact Electric Cars
The Stellantis group aims to make electric vehicles more accessible by launching a new generation of affordable urban models. This strategy hinges on the E-Car project, which will bring several brands within the group onto a shared technical base.
Citroën will lead the charge with a model inspired by the 2CV, unveiled in concept form at the Paris Motor Show 2026. Fiat is also prepping a new small electric car, which could bear the Koala name. Leapmotor, for its part, is expected to participate in the program with the next generation of its T03.
The head of product and technology development at Stellantis, Ned Curic, also explained that the group is collaborating with the Chinese automaker to accelerate the development of its future vehicles. The goal is to leverage this partnership while preserving the technical know‑how and development work within the European teams.
These new city cars are meant to help drive down design and production costs. The first models, due in 2028, are expected to be built at Stellantis’ Pomigliano d’Arco plant in Italy. The site currently manufactures the Fiat Panda and the Alfa Romeo Tonale.
Opel Could Return to the Small City-Car Segment
During a recent Stellantis briefing, the German brand was also linked to the E-Car program. It could thus round out this family of electric cars with its own model. Opel has not had a presence in the A-segment since the discontinuation of the Karl and Adam.
For now, the automaker has not announced the name of this future city car or its technical specifications. It remains unclear whether Opel will revive a historic name or launch a brand-new model. Names such as Agila, Viva, or Nova could recall Opel’s legacy, though no lead is confirmed.
Price will be another key factor. Citroën has set a target of around €15,000 before subsidies for its forthcoming electric 2CV. Opel could aim for a similar positioning in order to stay accessible to a broad audience, though no price has been made official.
The German city car could arrive after the Citroën, Fiat, and Leapmotor models. Fans will thus have to wait to learn its timeline, range, and the technical choices that will define it.
