A family van that channels GTI styling: that’s ABT Sportsline’s new proposition. The German tuner focused on the refreshed VW Multivan T7 and the new generation of the California. The stated goal: deliver more presence on the road without compromising the versatility of a family van. All of this arrives as Volkswagen updates its large MPVs for 2026.
ABT has developed a new “refinement package” for these two models, an official tune endorsed by Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. It adds fresh aero elements and 20-inch wheels. Shorter suspension springs and, in due course, a performance gain round out the package. With this treatment, the VW Multivan ABT and the VW California ABT imagine themselves as VIP shuttles. And yet these versions are meant to stay credible for families and campers, which raises a few questions.
A more aggressive look for the VW Multivan and California ABT
Visually, the “refinement package” is first noticeable up front, with a significantly more pronounced splitter beneath the bumper. Specific trim elements accentuate the side air intakes, giving the snout a sportier vibe without tipping into caricature. On the flanks, ABT installs gloss black side skirts that visually link the wheel arches. At the rear, a bumper cover with an integrated diffuser reinforces the stance. ABT does not offer a new rear spoiler; the stock element is already quite generous for a van.
The other hallmark of this pack is ABT Halo 20-inch wheels with a diamond finish. They fill the arches and give a more grounded road presence. ABT offers optional lowering springs that drop the ride height by about 30 mm. This reduced ride height promises improved handling and a feel closer to that of a dynamic minivan. For a VW Multivan ABT meant for family trips or corporate shuttles, the compromise makes sense. For a California oriented toward camping, the lowered ride height could make some rough roads trickier to navigate.
Mechanical, ABT Power and the commercialization of the VW Multivan ABT
Under the hood, the package currently does not alter the technical specs of the refreshed Multivan T7 and California. The lineup remains gasoline, diesel, and a plug-in hybrid version. The latter can reach up to 242 hp with 180 kW advertised. ABT is preparing an ABT Power evolution, presented as a performance kit. The tuner promises to “unlock the engine’s full potential.” This claim, reported by Carscoops, comes with no power or torque figures yet. For the moment, no details are given about fuel economy or range.
On the commercialization side, the “refinement package” for the Multivan T7 and California is set to arrive soon on the German market. Sources point to a fall 2026 launch, with order books opening in October. The kit will be offered in the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles configurator, for cash purchase or lease. Existing customers are not forgotten; the same package can also be installed as a plug‑and‑play aftermarket fit. Specific pricing has not yet been released. Early estimates put the premium at around €10,000, with configurations that could push the total beyond €100,000. There is currently no information about whether this will be offered on other European markets, including France.
