On the electric front, Volkswagen is pulling out all the stops. The year 2026 marks a true renewal, with a new version of the ID.3, now dubbed the ID.3 Neo, and the eagerly awaited ID. Polo, which aims to sit atop the compact electric city-car segment. Volkswagen is now preparing the arrival of a family-sized electric SUV, a name borrowed from a historic model from the automaker.
The ID.4 becomes the ID. Tiguan
For months, VW had teased the shift, reusing the Tiguan name for its new electric SUV that will replace the ID.4. Indeed, the ID.4 becomes the ID. Tiguan. The strategy mirrors what VW did with the ID. Polo: tie the electric lineup to more recognizable, consumer-friendly names, and also pave the way for transitioning the range to all-electric in the coming years.
The Volkswagen ID. Tiguan is thus a family-sized electric SUV built on the Tiguan’s footprint. However, despite the camouflage on its bodywork, it still looks a lot like an ID.4. So, is it a completely new model or a heavily modernized ID.4? We’ll have to wait for the release of full details about the new ID. Tiguan on October 9 before deciding.
Early testers who have driven the model say that inside, Volkswagen is bringing back physical controls for climate management and for the multimedia system. A bit like in the interior of the Volkswagen ID. Polo.
Up to 373 miles of range
The ID. Tiguan will be offered in three power outputs: 190, 286, and 299 horsepower, with battery packs ranging from 58 to 77 kWh. The entry-level trim will be the Pure, featuring a 58 kWh LFP battery and a 190-hp motor for a range up to about 280 miles. Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes 26 minutes with a peak power of 105 kW.
The next version, Pro, draws on a 77 kWh LFP battery with a rear-mounted 286-hp motor and a WLTP-rated range up to about 373 miles. Using the same battery, the Pro 4MOTION variant adds a pair of motors for a combined 299 hp and a range up to about 348 miles. When it comes to charging, it takes 29 minutes to go from 10 to 80 percent, with a maximum charging power of 165 kW.
Pricing for the new Volkswagen ID. Tiguan remains undisclosed, nor is the final styling confirmed, and the model is slated for unveiling at the Paris Motor Show. All details will be released on October 9.
