What looked like a living-room fantasy is returning through a far more down-to-earth path: patent offices. While the project had been thought shelved in the museum of great concepts, Genesis has just had the drawing of its large two-door concept derived from the G90—and its Gran Convertible—registered in the United States. That could revive the idea of a true two-door flagship in the Korean brand’s lineup.
Hidden behind these filings are the concepts Genesis X Gran Coupe and Genesis X Gran Convertible, revealed at the Seoul Mobility Show 2025 as spectacular derivatives of the large Genesis G90 sedan. The new design patents granted in August 2026 don’t constitute a production green light, but they clearly show that Genesis hasn’t closed the file. And if this luxurious grand tourer eventually makes it to production, could it someday reach the brand’s future European customers, including in France?
Genesis G90 Coupe: From a Shocking Concept to US Design Patents
The G90 is Genesis’ flagship limousine, already renowned for its comfort and refinement. In spring 2025, the brand decided to push it even further by turning it into a two-door GT: the Genesis X Gran Coupe and its cabriolet derivative Genesis X Gran Convertible made their world debut at the Seoul Mobility Show 2025. Two-body configurations, 2+2 seating, long-hood GT proportions, sharp lines, and a stance that recalls Europe’s most prestigious touring cars.
These two models form part of the “G90 Trilogy” of concepts, alongside the G90 Wingback, which is meant to push the sedan’s image toward the very high end. They feature Genesis’ signature Two-Line lighting, a massive hood, widened fenders, long door panels, and, most notably, large rectangular exhaust outlets integrated into the rear bumper. A striking detail for concepts that, initially, seemed to be primarily illustrating the carmaker’s electric vision.
Toward Production of the Genesis X Gran Coupe and the X Gran Convertible?
The latest developments come from the United States, via the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Two design patents were granted: one for the Genesis X Gran Convertible (design patent D1,138,892 issued August 4, 2026), and the other for the Genesis X Gran Coupe (D1,144,037 issued August 25, 2026). Both filings were originally submitted in late July 2025, with priority registered in Korea in March 2025, in Class D12/92 dedicated to large passenger cars.
- Patent D1,138,892: design of the X Gran Convertible, granted August 4, 2026;
- Patent D1,144,037: design of the X Gran Coupe, granted August 25, 2026;
- Classification D12/92: protection of exterior appearance, with no technical disclosures.
These patents do not discuss engines or chassis; they protect only the style. Yet the drawings released remain very close to the showroom concepts: unchanged proportions, the same signature lighting, realistic mirrors and bumpers, and even a clearly defined convertible top compartment on the cabriolet. Trade press outlets see in this evidence that Genesis has worked out a production-ready bodystyle based on the existing G90 platform rather than on an entirely new architecture.
Another clue supporting the idea of a petrol or hybrid GT: the prominent rectangular exhaust outlets appear clearly in the patented views. The most logical technical base would thus be the current G90, which already offers a 3.5-liter twin-turbo V6 with mild hybridization around 409 horsepower. Rumors even hint at a more muscular variant tied to Genesis’ Magma racing program. Some observers imagine a positioning against the Bentley Continental GT and Aston Martin DB12, with a price range between $120,000 and $160,000 (roughly €110,000 to €150,000).
One major unknown remains: the industrial decision. Automakers regularly file design patents for concepts that never reach the road. Genesis continues to officially categorize the Genesis X Gran Coupe and the Genesis X Gran Convertible as mere studies. Yet the combination of a proven base (the G90), a well-developed body, and a market for large GTs that has been left open by several mainstream brands creates an intriguing window. Moreover, the brand has announced its expansion into new European markets in 2026, including France, where such a coupe could serve as a halo car to help the brand make a name for itself.
