Opel is preparing a new version of the Astra that should become significantly more sporty. The German brand has just confirmed the arrival of a variant delivering 280 hp, to be unveiled in 2027. If Opel has not yet revealed its full technical specs, this new version could become one of the most powerful Astras ever offered.
The novelty fits into a broader strategy around the GSE name. Following the Corsa GSE and Mokka GSE, both 100% electric and delivering 280 hp, Opel will progressively extend this identity to other models in its lineup. The Astra will be the first to inaugurate the new GSE Line designation.
A Sportier New Trim
The Astra GSE Line will make its public debut at the Paris Motor Show 2026. It will replace the current GS trim starting in the spring of 2027 and will be offered with the full range of powertrains available for the Astra. So you’ll be able to get this sporty look with an electric drivetrain, but also with plug-in hybrid, hybrid, and petrol options.
Opel has worked on several details to differentiate this new trim. The front end evolves notably with distinctive elements under the iconic Vizor, while the bumper bears the GSE Line badge. Seventeen-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels will be standard, with 18-inch models available as an option.
The interior also adopts a more dynamic vibe. The seats, the steering wheel, the door inserts and the central armrest feature bright yellow stitching. Aluminum sport pedals complete the look. Specific sport seats with integrated head restraints will also be available as an option on certain powertrains.
An Astra with 280 horsepower Expected in 2027
But the main novelty will arrive a few months after the launch of this trim. Opel has indeed announced a top-end version developing 280 horsepower, which is to be unveiled later in 2027. The brand has not yet specified which powertrain will be used, nor provided numbers regarding range, performance, or battery capacity. Opel also notes that the vehicle, its trim, and its powertrain are not yet available to order.
This power would be particularly interesting for the electric Astra if Opel sticks with the same setup as on the Corsa GSE and Mokka GSE. These two models indeed feature a 280-hp electric motor and a front limited-slip differential. The electric Astra, being technically closely related to the Corsa and Mokka, makes it likely that this powertrain would power the electric Astra as well, using the same front LSD. But the market for sporty electric compact cars is more crowded than that for sporty city cars, sometimes including rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive sporty offerings, so Opel could refine this 280-hp setup to make it even more, well, sporty.
