She dislocates her shoulder while grabbing a parking ticket and blocks a full parking lot in Millau, France

September 19, 2026

Snatching a parking ticket is something we all do without thinking. In Millau, that small act proved enough to send a motorist to the hospital and to freeze the exit of an entire underground parking garage for nearly an hour on a weekday morning.

Friday, September 18, 2026, in the early hours, a driver was preparing to leave the Emma Calvé Parking Garage. She rolled up to the exit gate, stretched out her arm to insert her exit ticket… and her shoulder abruptly dislocated. The pain was immediate, the car remained stationary at the toll, and a line began to form. By the time bystanders alerted the staff and responders arrived on the scene, access to the Emma Calvé Parking Garage in Millau was paralyzed, turning a routine departure into a genuine standstill.

A dislocated shoulder at the toll booth and a parking garage blocked for nearly an hour

In the moment, the driver could not move. Her shoulder dislocation—what many people call a dislocated shoulder—had occurred. Trapped behind the wheel, writhing in pain, she could not exit the vehicle or move it away from the payment terminal. Other motorists behind her noticed the situation, raised the alarm, while the site security staff mobilized to secure the area and guide drivers who were growing impatient.

Firefighters arrived promptly. The victim was first attended to inside her car, where the responders stabilized her and tried to ease the pain without worsening the injury. Once she could be moved, she was carefully extracted from the vehicle and transported to Millau Hospital. Throughout the operation, the only exit route remained blocked by the immobilized car. As a result, access to the parking garage was blocked for nearly an hour, sparking a traffic buildup with motorists stuck both inside and outside, until traffic resumed normally after the ambulance left the scene.

The Emma Calvé Parking Garage’s central role in Millau and the precautions to watch

If this incident drew so much attention, it’s because it happened at the exit of the Emma Calvé Parking Garage, one of the city’s main underground parking facilities in the heart of downtown Millau. Located on Emma Calvé Square, just a short walk from the Halles market and shops, this roughly 320-space facility is among the critical access points to reach the city center. The typical underground layout also plays a role: a single exit, close walls, a narrow ramp, and the impossibility of overtaking a vehicle that’s stalled. As soon as a car remains stuck at the payment terminal, the entire chain freezes, and any intervention immediately takes on a different dimension for drivers behind.

Medically, a shoulder dislocation occurs when the head of the humerus slips out of its socket. It happens during a forceful or overly large motion, sometimes during a seemingly ordinary gesture, such as reaching the arm far in front. While driving, the risk increases when the car is parked too far from the terminal, when the driver is restrained by a seat belt and must twist the torso to reach the ticket or reader. Adjusting the seat properly, stopping at a safe distance from the terminal, and keeping the back against the seat back already reduce these strains. And if, despite everything, a discomfort or injury occurs at the toll, the priority remains the same: activate the hazard lights, alert staff via the emergency call button, and have a bystander dial 911 so responders can access the scene freely and prevent the situation from spiraling further for the entire parking facility.
