There is a figure strolling through Madrid’s paddock who isn’t fond of these shindigs. But this time he has a good reason. Kimi Raikkonen is in Madrid, mainly in Red Bull’s paddock, where he has just sealed a major deal: his son, Robin Raikkonen, becomes the new crown jewel of Red Bull’s academy.
Since he was very young Raikkonen boasted on his social media about his eldest’s karting exploits, but it seems it wasn’t just a father’s love. Now a Formula 1 giant like Red Bull has jumped ahead of the competition to sign the Finnish gem and give him the resources needed to reach the top.
Robin Raikkonen, Red Bull’s new development driver
When Kimi Raikkonen boasted about his son’s karting exploits while he was still very young, it might have seemed like an eccentricity, but time has not taken long to give him reason. Red Bull officially announced the signing of Robin Raikkonen as a development driver. Notably for his young age, only 11 years old.
Laurent Mekies, head of Red Bull, considers that “Robin has already demonstrated exceptional skill in karting. His speed, racecraft, and natural talent have cemented him as one of the most promising young drivers for his age. At the same time, he stands out for his maturity, his calmness and his clear focus on driving.”
The little Raikkonen has already raced in the Minis, and at Red Bull they see potential even though he hasn’t won the championship. So they rushed to sign him at only 11 years old, an age ill-suited for this kind of deal. They don’t know if he will reach Formula 1, but they want to give him every possible opportunity.
That is why Mekies states that “our objective is to develop him step by step, without putting unnecessary pressure on him“. The path in motorsport is long, and we will provide him with the time, the support and the resources necessary to maximize his potential. From now on, Raikkonen will wear Red Bull colors, as his father did, sponsored by the energy drink brand.
For now the youngest debutant in Formula 1 history is Max Verstappen, who ran his first race at 17 years and 166 days. He was also a Red Bull driver. The Austrians do not hesitate to give opportunities to their young talents when they see them ready, nor to discard them the moment they stop showing potential.

For his part, Kimi Raikkonen only says that “it’s very exciting. They offer a solid and complete program to foster Robin’s progress in the coming years.” He couldn’t have a better mentor for Robin.
