Buying an Electric Car? Why Your Trusted Mechanic Won’t Touch It Anymore

August 28, 2026

Getting hands-on with the mechanics of a hybrid or electric car completely reshapes the dynamic of a workshop: a fault that, at first glance, seems routine demands advanced high-voltage know-how, specialized diagnostic tools, and extreme safety protocols that are unimaginable in a conventional vehicle. Thus, traditional neighborhood garages face a colossal challenge where occupational safety and cutting-edge technology dictate the survival of the business.

On top of this technical metamorphosis comes suffocating economic pressure and the mass arrival of new Chinese brands to the market. While administrations push for the adoption of these efficient vehicles, small independent establishments must shoulder investments of thousands of euros with little institutional support. All of this is causing a bottleneck in maintenance, shop closures, and endless waiting lists that end up burdening the drivers themselves.

High voltage drives up the bill before you start

The toll to upgrade a business is enormous. In an interview for Coches.net, Juan Carlos García, head of the technical area at ASETRA, explains that electrification requires adding highly specialized training, updated diagnostic equipment, insulated tools, and clearly delineated work zones. In this sense, the Fevauto association, according to statements to the Castellón Plaza newspaper, estimate that the safety equipment alone costs between 5,000 and 6,000 euros.

The effort is real: a recent Telemadrid report showed how Natram Workshop in the capital has already invested 8,500 euros. In addition to these amounts, there is nearly mandatory purchase of lifts capable of supporting 4,000 to 5,000 kilograms.

Not to mention that working with such high voltages carries a deadly risk if mistakes are made. Fernando Valle, president of Fevauto, warns in the Castellón outlet that disconnecting an electric car incorrectly “can cause extremely grave electric shocks.” Moreover, if a battery is damaged, the vehicle must be isolated outside the premises due to the risk of sudden fire.

Obsolete facilities and the bureaucratic labyrinth

The physical adaptation of the premises to all these aspects is another insurmountable barrier for many. Manuel Vidal, manager of Vimar, acknowledges in La Voz de Galicia that to offer these services “he would have to leave his current location in Ribeira due to lack of space to perimeter the danger zones.” Others need to increase contracted electrical capacity or install complex extinguishing systems.

On the bureaucratic level, the requirement rises with certifications such as the European SERMI certificate, essential since 2024 for independent professionals to access the manufacturers’ electronic information concerning, for example, anti-theft systems, key programming, electronic locks or safety software.

These barriers explain the enormous current inequality in the sector: the ASETRA workshop association estimates that barely 30% of workshops have training for basic electrified work; while data from Posventa Plural place the proportion of establishments with a professional charging point at a mere 22%, equivalent to about 8,800 of nearly 40,000 Spanish venues. But having a charger at the door obviously does not guarantee knowing how to open and repair the interior of a battery.

The Asian influx collides with the lack of qualified personnel

The entire perfect storm hits an industry already burdened by a severe shortage of qualified professionals. As Fernando Valle asserts, “the collapse already generates waiting lists of three to four months,” leaving official services to shoulder repairs that neighborhood workshops cannot manage.

In this sense, the Recomotor platform notes that parts inquiries about these cars have grown by 214% in twelve months… as they begin their first maintenance cycles and someone has to fix them and/or service them. Meanwhile, workload grows with the wave of Chinese manufacturers, who registered 75,024 passenger cars in Spain in the first half of 2026 (a 12.3% market share) according to data from the employers’ association ANFAC.

Those who manage to adapt demonstrate a brutal level of commitment, but they do so taking on risks alone. A good example is Martín Redondo, owner of a multi-brand center in Outes prepared for these mechanics, who tells La Voz de Galicia how he had to install photovoltaic panels to reach 100% self-consumption to avoid unaffordable electricity bills.

Therefore, professionals such as Germán Palomas, president of the Gremi de Tallers, call for public aid for sustainable mobility to finally reach mechanics. After all, the electric car not only needs a place to plug in, it also requires skilled professionals to keep it running.
