In Brief
The Xpeng P7+ RWD Long Range positions itself as an attractive electric sedan thanks to its generous equipment, reasonable range, and a competitive price compared with its peers. It also shines with interior comfort, solid finish, and a 7-year warranty. Yet, driving assists are poorly suited for the European market, ergonomics could be improved, and the suspension remains a weak point that tarnishes the overall impression. Ultimately, the P7+ delivers solid performance but is undermined by a few technical shortcomings that limit its appeal for Europe.
Xpeng, you know it? I’ll grant you, keeping up with the news from the hundred-plus Chinese brands isn’t easy!
Xpeng P7+ RWD Long Range: a luxurious sedan!
This automaker, founded in Guangzhou in 2014, models itself on American Tesla by aiming at tech enthusiasts with advanced semi-autonomous driving, XXL screens, and artificial intelligence. After the G6 SUV (a Tesla Model Y competitor) and the G9 (closer in size to a Model X), comes the P7+, a voluptuous 5.07-meter sedan. To put it into Tesla terms—sticking with the reference—the car is about 1 inch longer than the former Model S. Yet it wears a radically different, distinctive look, featuring a cab-forward profile: short hood and a pronounced rear overhang.
Inside, however, Tesla owners won’t feel lost: the same philosophy persists, with hardly any physical controls, most functions gathered on the vast 15.6-inch central touchscreen. One detail stands out: the P7+ retains an 8.8-inch digital instrument cluster in front of the driver, complemented by a full heads-up display. The menus, though, lack clarity and are sometimes poorly translated.
Xpeng P7+ RWD Long Range: nothing to complain about in the rear cabin
Nothing to complain about on the practicality front, with extremely generous rear seats and a deep, easy-to-load trunk thanks to a power tailgate that opens wide. The P7+ also demonstrates solid build quality, with high-quality materials and flawless assembly. Note, though, that the Nappa leather looks vegan and the materials aren’t always perfectly coordinated. Still, the equipment list is incredibly long, including heated, ventilated, and massaging seats for all four main seats, semi-autonomous driving, a parking assist system, a panoramic glass roof, a heat pump, and a rear-seat touchscreen, all at a competitive price of €49,990 (about $54,000 in the U.S. market).
That price sits above the Tesla Model 3 Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive (€44,990) and the BYD Seal Design (€46,990), which are still smaller and less richly equipped, but well below the Volkswagen ID.7 Pro Life Max (€60,990) and far from the DS N°8 FWD Long Range Étoile (€71,450). Moreover, Xpeng is the only one offering a 7-year/160,000 km warranty (about 99,000 miles). Despite multiple seat adjustments, the driver sits a touch high, though the seat’s plushness is appreciated.
Xpeng P7+ RWD Long Range: three versions on the menu
From the first kilometers, the sound insulation impresses. The P7+ goes all out: laminated windshield and front windows, a thick sound-damping layer, and active noise reduction. It thus evolves calmly and also offers, for the first time on an Xpeng, a one-pedal mode that lets you avoid using the brake pedal. Unfortunately, it can only be activated via the touchscreen, and only while the car is stationary—unless you toggle among the four configurable driving modes. Likewise, the regen level can only be adjusted through the screen. We would have preferred steering-wheel paddles. The lineup includes three variants: the RWD Standard Range with a rear 245 hp motor and a 61.7 kWh gross battery; the AWD Performance, which uses a 74.9 kWh LFP pack and two motors (503 hp); and finally our RWD Long Range, a middle-ground variant that uses the same pack as the Performance but omits the front motor.
Xpeng P7+ RWD Long Range: strong performance
With 313 hp and a curb weight listed at 4,600 pounds (about 2,100 kg), the P7+ RWD Long Range already posts impressive performance (0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds), but it never rattles its occupants, especially with the exceptionally well-insulated cabin masking speed. And it remains efficient: in a mixed highway and city route without optimizing for economy, we recorded an average consumption of 17.6 kWh/100 km (roughly 28 kWh/100 miles). An excellent result for a car of this size. Given its battery, the P7+ should easily exceed 260 miles (about 420 km) of range in our upcoming Montlhéry tests. Even better, it only needs about 12 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, with a peak charging rate of up to 446 kW. Efficient and capable of a rapid fill, the Xpeng sedan clearly has all the tools to appeal to long-distance drivers.
Xpeng P7+ RWD Long Range: driving assists, the weak link
Unfortunately, the Chinese manufacturer seems to have fallen short in tailoring the model to the specifics of the European market. Starting with the driving assists: the lane-keeping assist “corrects” the trajectory too aggressively, producing stiff steering inputs and sometimes unsettling nudges. Moreover, it never fully disengages. The drowsiness alert triggers erratically, while odd messages like “Unable to slow down when accelerating” appear on the central screen, which can distract the driver. As for the semi-autonomous driving, it slows down too much when approaching long highway curves. These assists end up being a source of stress. On the chassis side, the P7+ deserves more tuning. Handling is balanced and reassuring on dry roads, and this rear-driven setup never tricks you, but the steering feels vague with a wide dead zone around the center, and it can stiffen inexplicably in handling corners. Finally, the adaptive suspension never finds the right balance: it wanders in Comfort and lets vibrations through in the mid and sport modes, without translating into real chassis dynamism. Either way, the seats lack substantial lateral support. Don’t push the P7+, it doesn’t enjoy being pushed hard.

The Auto-Journal verdict: 3.5/5
Equipment, practicality, electrical architecture, comfort, and price: the P7+ has solid arguments! But its finickier interfaces, soft suspension, steering lacking in consistency, and especially the intrusive driving assists spoil the overall picture.
