Almost a year after unveiling the concept car at Le Mans, Peugeot used the 2026 edition of the 24 Hours to reveal the production version of the Peugeot e-208 GTi, the most powerful and sporty variant of the 208.
The official return of the GTi badge, absent since late 2020, arrives in a segment with increasingly fierce rivals, such as the Alpine A290, MINI John Cooper Works, or the CUPRA Raval, and while awaiting the Volkswagen ID.Polo GTI.
Peugeot 208 GTI eléctrico: un coche halo
The new 208 GTi stays faithful to the prototype with only minor differences.
The 18‑inch wheels no longer sit flush with the fenders, which slightly softens the visual width. The front track is widened by 5.6 cm and the rear by 2.8 cm compared with a standard 208, and the ride height is reduced by 2.5 cm. The central GTi badge on the wheels disappears in favor of a more restrained lion emblem, and the GTi lettering returns to the C pillar, as in the days of the brilliant 205 GTi.
The color palette follows the standard 208: Okénite White is the default, with Black Pearl, Agueda Yellow, Selenium Gray, Artense Gray, and Miramar Blue (€800 each), and Elixir Red (€1,000). Obviously, the vivid 18‑layer red of the concept car did not survive into serial production.
The cabin preserves a sporty atmosphere with red accents in the carpeting, floor mats, seat belts, and stitching. The sport seats, unique to this model and inspired by the 205 GTi, are paired with a perforated leather and Alcantara steering wheel. The i-Cockpit offers a customizable red display and allows you to switch the artificial sound on or off. The materials and assembly are up to standard.
The 280 hp and 345 Nm engine and built in Trémery, is the same unit that already powers the Abarth 600e and the Lancia Ypsilon HF. The 208 GTi wears Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, not the most efficient for an electric car, but they are very effective in a sporty application.
A final note tests aside, this time the aim isn’t to chase the greatest autonomy but a sporty feel; Peugeot reconfigured the ESP, while the 0–100 km/h sprint falls to 5.5 s (nine tenths quicker than the Alpine A290 GTS and four tenths quicker than the 259 hp MINI JCW). Top speed is limited to 180 km/h.

The curb weight is 1,610 kg in running order, 80 kg more than a 136 hp e-208. The extra mass is down to a heavier motor, an integrated limited-slip differential, and a reinforced braking system with 355 mm discs and four-piston calipers on the front axle, and 268 mm discs at the rear. The suspension features new springs, dampers with hydraulic stops, and a thicker anti-roll bar, all to give it a more sporting character.
The 50.8 kWh usable CATL battery (54 kWh gross) provides a WLTP range of 350 to 374 km, Peugeot states. In practice, with an approved average consumption of 17 kWh, the real-world range should be around 300 km. AC charging at up to 7.4 kW takes 4 h 40 min to go from 20% to 80%; while DC charging at a modest 100 kW trims that to 27 minutes.
Peugeot leans on the nostalgia of the 205 GTi for this electric GTi. While we’ll have to wait a bit to see if it’s truly as fun as its predecessor, or if it’s just a marketing play, we already know what it will cost.

The electric Peugeot 208 GTi starts at €41,800, just €100 less than an Alpine A290 GT Performance, €800 less than a MINI JCW electric, and €265 less than a CUPRA Raval VZ. A price for the 208 GTi that can drop to €38,200 applying the Auto+ plan.
Peugeot will produce the 208 GTi in limited quantities and presents this car more as a style-focused halo product than a volume model. Serial production will begin in September, with first deliveries planned for the last quarter of the year.
