Confirmed: FIA sanctions Sergio Pérez and gives Fernando Alonso his first point of the season

Incredible but true. Fernando Alonso has managed to score points at the Monaco Grand Prix in Formula 1. The Spanish driver crossed the finish line in eleventh place, but he secured the final point thanks to a penalty handed to Sergio Pérez by the stewards after the race.

Sergio Pérez has been penalized with ten seconds added to his time for lining up incorrectly on the starting grid. Cadillac thus loses what had been its first point in Formula 1. The most curious thing is that Pérez messed up his position in both starts that were made this Sunday in Monaco.

Fernando Alonso opened his points tally against all odds in Monaco. On the circuit that had been Aston Martin’s worst to date, the Asturian driver clinched tenth place despite crossing the finish line eleventh. A post-race penalty from the stewards tipped the balance in his favor in the end.

Alonso finished the chaotic Monaco race in eleventh place, benefiting from accidents, penalties and safety cars that took seven drivers out of contention. But there was still one last twist in the offices to push him up to tenth, as it happened.

Sergio Pérez has been penalized by the stewards with a ten-second penalty. The reason is that he mispositioned his car on the grid before the second start, after the red flag. The Mexican left the Cadillac slightly ahead of the starting box, something FIA stewards could not overlook.

And the worst part is that Pérez was a repeat offender. Because in the first start he already received a penalty for the same reason, as the Mexican forgot that Gabriel Bortoleto’s Audi was coming out of the pits and he positioned himself in his grid slot. So by making mistakes in both starts, Pérez’s penalty adds up to ten seconds.

As Alonso crossed the finish line just over a second behind Pérez, he inherited that tenth place in a race nobody expected him to contend, after a terrible weekend with multiple gearbox problems. In fact, his teammate, Lance Stroll, ended up crashing into the wall.

With this penalty Cadillac loses what had been its first point in Formula 1. In fact, Pérez drops to fifteenth position. In other news, Alpine has also announced that it will appeal the pit-lane speed-limit penalty that cost Pierre Gasly a podium to Isack Hadjar.
