Ford’s Super Duty lineup has been a long-serving lynchpin in the company’s sales machine due to their impressive capability and ability to bring the fight to rivals from Ram and Chevrolet. But some of the current generation Super Duty‘s core essentials haven’t changed too much since 2017 ( the trucks were mildly updated for 2020.) But that’s not stopping the company from continually improving this stout workhorse, and the firm has revealed the latest round of updates for 2022.
Bigger Screen Cement 2022 Super Duty Interior Changes
A key change that Ford made for the 2021 Super Duty was adding a bigger screen for the infotainment system. While it’s still smaller than the massive screen employed by Ram, the 12-inch unit does allow the Super Duty to fight on a more level playing field against some of the segment’s best. The beefier screen also comes with better software, with Ford’s all-new SYNC 4 system coming along for the ride. Double the computing power means enhanced loading speeds and the opportunity for different layouts, which help enhance ergonomics too.
The software also brings wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, eliminating the need to hook a device up via USB cable. The only catch is that the system is not available across all trim levels, with buyers having to upgrade to a Lariat model or higher to access it. Lower trims will get smaller screens with a 4.2 screen continuing to be standard on the XL and the XLT getting a bigger 8.0-inch screen. While the improved technology is a welcome addition to the truck, it still does little to dispel the long in the tooth feeling that the rest of the cabin has, especially in terms of build quality and plastic choices which we highlighted in our most recent Super Duty review.
New Sport Appearance Package Adds Poise To The Work Site
The exterior styling does not change radically for 2022, but the lone change here is the addition of an all-new styling package. Dubbed the Lariat Sport Appearance Package, this trim exclusive design effort largely does what you would expect it to, with the package replacing many of the chrome pieces with body-color ones. Other goodies that come along for the ride include a chrome exhaust tip and black-hued running boards.
In other news, Ford is also making the existing Black Appearance Package an available option on the XLT model. This package blacks out many of the exterior badges and adorns the truck with 20-inch Ebony Black wheels. Other extras include body-colored front and rear fascias as well as body-colored bars for the front grille. A trio of all-new interior colors also comes to the 2022 Super Duty, with our favorite being the Baja color scheme for the Lariat.
When Can I Buy A 2022 Ford Super Duty?
Buyers looking to buy the updated 2022 Ford Super Duty lineup will be pleased to hear that they will begin arriving in showrooms this summer. The Lariat Sport Appearance Package is included in the initial rollout. However, the Black Appearance Package will take a bit longer to make its way into the wild, with the first examples of those appearing in fall.
The updates didn’t touch the performance hardware, with the 2022 version retaining its 7.3-liter gasoline V8, which still produces 430 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque. The engine is offered alongside the optional 6.7 liter Power Stroke diesel engine, which makes 475 horsepower but is the best choice for towing with the oil burner producing a massive 1,050 lb-ft of torque.
