2008 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione – Gooding Amelia Island 2019 Highlight

It is hard to predict which supercars will really stop you in your tracks when you find one in real life. We’ve certainly seen a few of these 8C’s in the flesh before but on this day the ultra-smooth, curvaceous bodywork seemed simply flawless. Timeless appeal. Even while the logical part of the brain cries out about the Maserati engine and chassis basis. And even while more modern machines beckon with their simmery LEDs and angular lines.

Re-discovering the 8C’s design is interesting. It is even possible to trace its front fender shapes onto the 4C Spider.  Both cars are actually about the same size – impossibly wide by also aggressively short in wheelbase.

Favorite angle for the 8C is actually the tail aspect. This ultra simplified look recalls a simpler time. A time when car designs would actually be sketched before rendered in clay. Long before computer-aided visualizations took over the universe. There is somehow an analog, throwback appeal in the 8C that should prove evergreen for many years to come.

The flawless condition and near-new cabin (as well as original window sticker and fitted luggage) of this example helped it earn $357k at the Gooding & Company Amelia Island 2019 auction. That is about even to its $300K sale price when 84 of them were imported to the US market in total a decade ago.  When most supercar values should be slumping by this age, the 8C holds up. In the flesh, it is easy to see why.
