The configurator is almost a two-click affair. Just a few key choices to make it yours from $25k: transmission, trim and cabin color. (All these prices include the $820 delivery charge, by the way.)
Sport kicks things off, followed by Club, and up to the top-line GT. With an automatic and every option checked, the new MX-5 GT is almost $33,000 exactly. A Club with the Brembo/BBS pack is within a few hundred bucks, but lacks heated seats and a few other comfort features.
The base Sport and GT can be enhanced by a bodykit Appearance pack option for $1200. A front airdam, side sills and rear diffuser upgrade look sexy – many of the press demo cars feature the upgrade. The standard Club spec includes the pack plus LED foglamps. All run LED headlamps, which is great news.
2016 Mazda MX-5 Club + Brembo/BBS Pack
Dark eight-spoke wheels make a standard appearance in 16-inch size. These jump to 17-inch gunmetal grey alloys on the Club. The Club wheels in Dark Silver are on the GT. The differences among these rims is not really visible on the configurator — nor are the appearance pack details — but we’d say the Club is the one to go for to get the look of the white hottie above.
The mid-priced MX-5 Club from $28,600 just sealed the deal for us via the specs sheet: the Club manual transmission is the only 2016 MX-5 to feature a limited-slip differential. An LSD makes it easier to hold and control tail-out action, and is highly recommended.
The snicky six-speed manual Club is definitely the purist’s choice then. But even so, the auto is a snappy unit itself with effective Sport modes. The cabin comes in black or tan, with a stylish vertical tablet touchscreen looking extra snazzy with the top down.
All in, driving the new MX-5 Club through some twisties is a new life goal for this author!
