Every muscle car aficionado has his or her own version of the Holy Grail. For Bowtie buffs, many will confer that title on this unrestored triple-Black 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle SS454 LS6 coupe. That’s right: unrestored and still retaining its original Tuxedo Black paint, vinyl top and interior. It came into Tim Wellborn’s possesion in January 2006 at his first Mecum Auction in Kissimmee, Florida, when he was searching for something interesting to add to his muscle car musuem. It was sold new at Mills Chevrolet in Moline, Illinois, and traded in two years later by its first owner. Along came Ivan Schildhegn of Lancaster, Wisconsin, who bought the Chevelle and meticulously cared for it until he passed away in 2004.
Ivan’s daughter recalled him using black tape to cover the chromed “454” part of the SS fender badges to fool unsuspecting potential takers into thinking that it was a regular SS model as well as recording every oil change performed in his 30-plus year ownership. The first owner drove the car approximately 24,000 miles; from then until Wellborn purchased the car in 2006, it was driven just 8,400 miles; the total original mileage is now just 33,610. Before going on display at the Wellborn Musclecar Museum, Wellborn turned the car over to Roger Gibson, who performed a careful and restrained clean-up, one that did not even disturb the dust that had collected over the years on the original LS6 454/450 HP engine.
The SS package added extensively to the base Chevelle with the LS6 engine, dual exhaust, power front disc brakes, heavy-duty suspension, SS-specific gauges and SS badging and trim. The car is lightly optioned from the factory with bucket seats and console, AM radio, floor-shifted 400 Turbo automatic, power steering and stripe delete to maximize its menacing air. Featured on the cover of Muscle Car Review in October 2011, this factory all-Black LS6 Chevelle is documented with the original build sheet, warranty transfer from 1972, Protect-O-Plate and owner’s manual.
