When it comes to model pricing, manufacturers seem to have a few strategies across brands and model lines. We’ve observed two concrete patterns:
— at the low end, pricing pushes the limits of profitability to have that headline-grabbing base price
— at the top end, things get seriously ambitious. Any chop in the margins of the base car is nearly doubled up top.
This makes sense. A low base price can help people to jump a price bracket on the hope that they can afford a larger or better car for their limited cash. But with options and a good equipment package, the pricing of numerous models can grow to nearly unreal levels. A Chrysler 200 for $40,000? A Range Rover Evoque for $55,000?
Oh yes. Both of these models definitely exist on dealer lots.
The ‘gotcha’ in options pricing is that once buyers want the car, the pricing for options can just be added to their monthly cost. The conversation goes something like this:
“Five bucks extra a month! That is totally do-able, honey!”
HOW TO BEAT THE NUMBER-CRUNCHERS?
What about a counter-strategy for shoppers? How about selecting models from the top down. Who doesn’t want the most-loaded car with leather and navigation? That’s right: nobody.
So what if you shop based on how pricey the cars can actually get?
In that case, crossovers like the RAV4, Escape and even the CR-V pass our $30,000 cap in their loaded trims. Nissan Rogue is darn close.
With this top-down strategy hypothesis, one small crossover stands above the rest: The Hyundai Tucson.
Sure, its base price is less than $22,000. But all-in, with everything, the Tucson is hard to push past $30,000.
It is stylish, easy to own and easy to use. A high ride height and available AWD make it blizzard-capable in a way that no Civic or Elantra is — while also giving a great view in traffic and fold-down practicality in the trunk.
The Tucson is so well-equipped in its top trim that it is hard to think of a feature it won’t be able to check off buyers’ shopping lists. Perhaps vented seats. That might be it.
Otherwise, it has the works.
So there you have it: a top-down pricing rationale for choosing the attractive and lovable 2015 Hyundai Tucson.
