Gooding Pebble Beach 2014 Highlights – 1926 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Playboy Roadster

Here is a real glam-shuttle for Jay Gatsby himself. If only it were yellow, it might finally woo Zelda from across West Egg….

The Playboy Roadster’s sale price of $264,000 is at the low end of the estimate, with lots of upward mobility in the future.

THIS CAR

The “Springfield Silver Ghost” was frst built in Rolls-Royce’s new motor car production facility in Springfield, Massachusetts, in October 1919. Modifications like left-hand drive and three-speed gearboxes were incorporated into the British chassis to suit American drivers while retaining high standards of the cars built in England.

Chassis no. S400RK first wore a formal Rolls-Royce Custom Coachwork “Mayfair” body by Willoughby. As the culture changed in the late 1920s, many chassis were refitted with more sporting bodies to appeal to younger buyers. This was one of those popular examples.

This Rolls-Royce was enjoyed by a series of owners in Michigan before being sent to Belgium, where, it remained in a private collection for several decades. It then traveled to the Rolls-Royce specialists Taylor’s, of Chichester, West Sussex in England, where from 2007 through 2012, it received an extensive overhaul including a complete engine rebuild – at a cost exceeding £60,000.

Finished to a high standard in a jaunty blue and red color combination with side-mounted spare wheel and polished wheel discs; and with its recent mechanical restoration managed by Rolls-Royce experts, S400RK will be welcomed at the most highly regarded concours and driving events.
