Speculative Renderings – 2014 Superformance GT40 Can-Am Spyder or Street-Able Convertible

So, if the Ford GT40 and the LOLA T70 Mk II Spyder share so much under the skin, and if the Lola is already available from Superformance — why bother with a meld of both these ideas?

Three reasons:

  • – The Lola cars have a far smaller following among the world’s enthusiasts, and therefore are a very niche machine

  • – If Ford had continued racing the GT40 concept after its four LeMans victories from 1966 to 1969, it is likely that the car would have adopted this style to match FIA’s rule changes. Can-Am was much closer to home than Le Sarthe, after all.

  • – The GT40 Speedster could offer Superformance the cherished double-down solution — for buyers who already adore their GT40 coupes, and might want an al fresco version as well.

Is it a brilliant idea ready for production tomorrow? No, it is not.

As these renderings show, there is a wide valley between the Lola Mk II’s almost-nonexistent front windshield and one that might find far more takers: a street-able cabrio version.

The renderings begin as a Can-Am Spyder, but in profile, you can really see how little front windscreen plexiglass there is. Goggles or a full face-helmet would be almost mandatory for all speeds above 50MPH.

A regular cabrio?

A few issues with this as well, including the huge rear haunches of the GT40 design, roll-over safety, and the feasibility of the concept from a rights-management perspective. Not to mention if a convertible top could even be possible.

Fair-weather speedsters do not generally need a top of any kind…

All Superformance machines are licensed and legit by Shelby and Safir Spares – who might not be as open to the idea of their parts going onto such a franken-racer.

But overall, a fun flight of fancy and hopefully entertaining to behold.

“Show your work,” good teachers always say…

The drafts are included here.
