Concept Flashback – 2006 BMW Mille Miglia

New cars can be tiring to write about. These concepts are my diversion before the real work begins.

Many concepts these days roll onto the stage with tight-lipped executives – who will say it only points toward a potential future design, etc.

If the exec in question is standing in front of a mono-pod spaceport of some kind, it is easy to trust him. But more than ever before, concept cars are a lightly veiled launch platform for the real-deal production car about 8 months later.

Cynical? Me? Never.

Some concepts have barely a chance in hell of seeing volume production, and these are often my favorites.

Such is the 2006 BMW Mille Miglia Concept, built to evolve and celebrate the race-winning 1937 BMW 328’s style.

Updating a car design from 80 years ago – without considering all the awesomeness in between – takes some serious creativity.

Luckily, BMW is chock full of smart ideas.

Enjoy this flashback at the Mille Miglia, a fully-running prototype with a clam-shell canopy and even a racing roll cage. Truly magnificent.
