2021 LOTUS EVIJA – USA Arrivals in Sept 2020 – Walkaround at Amelia Island Concours

Evaya is how it is said!  This stunning machine that is just six months from its first owners has a tricky name to pronounce.  As noted in the video Evija means first of its kind and the pronunciation takes Latin. This smooth beauty is quite an awesome step into the future for Lotus with its all-electric 2000HP drivetrain the most potent to ever be installed on any road car – ever. Watch the vid for more info on the car – with smooth viewing thanks to shooting this on the latest GoPro Hero8.   2021 LOTUS EVIJA – Detailed Walkaround …

Apollo Intensa Emozione at 2020 Amelia Island Concours

For hypercar fans the Apollos at this year’s Amelia Island Concours were undoubted stars of the show.  The gorgeous pair that the Apollo crew brought had a packed audience all week as everyone entering or leaving the Ritz stopped to gasp and stand in awe. The design is so shockingly aggressive and gorgeous that it seriously one-upped the McLarens parked just steps away.  Even the Senna looks tame beside this wild pair of painted dragons.  The dragon vibes are strong in the nose and especially in the tail.  You can easily imagine this machine spitting fire and hitting speeds you …

2008 Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione – Gooding Amelia Island 2019 Highlight

It is hard to predict which supercars will really stop you in your tracks when you find one in real life. We’ve certainly seen a few of these 8C’s in the flesh before but on this day the ultra-smooth, curvaceous bodywork seemed simply flawless. Timeless appeal. Even while the logical part of the brain cries out about the Maserati engine and chassis basis. And even while more modern machines beckon with their simmery LEDs and angular lines. Re-discovering the 8C’s design is interesting. It is even possible to trace its front fender shapes onto the 4C Spider.  Both cars are …

2018 Morgan 3.7 Roadster – Gallery at Amelia Island Concours 2019

Who knew that gloss black would look as good on some old-school wire wheels as it does on modern five-spoke alloys! This Morgan Roadster at Amelia Concours was a sight to behold – even sitting among its more powerful or more three-wheeled siblings in the Morgan range. Calling this the Morgan Roadster might seem slightly silly: aren’t they all roadsters, you might ask? That is besides the point. This is the V6 Roadster whose 5-second sprint to 60-mph and 140-mph top speed are perhaps the ideal performance levels for most shoppers.  Fast and fun with a 3.7-liter motor making 280HP, …

Updated – 1979 Porsche 935 – Gooding Amelia Island 2019

Update: This car is still available after not meeting its reserve. A few new photos of the machine from Amelia. It passed the two million mark but not close enough to three, apparently. The car seems to be in a ‘between’ period between campy and classic. 1979 Porsche 935 – Gooding Amelia 2019 Check out this beauty!  The wild paintwork and the massive racing aero dwarf the tiny 911 basis for this racecar.  The result is a machine nearly as wide as it is long, and as fire-spitting as any on the world’s racetracks.  Power is estimated at 650HP, which …

Check out this beauty!  The wild paintwork and the massive racing aero dwarf the tiny 911 basis for this racecar.  The result is a machine nearly as wide as it is long, and as fire-spitting as any on the world’s racetracks.  Power is estimated at 650HP, which is more than sufficient to scare the bejesus out of any driver! Favorite details include the oversized rear wheels with the magnesium heat shields in a deep dome shape.  And of course the whale tail and slant-nose front aero.  The silhouette is a thing of a million study-hall daydreams — but brought to …

2018 Mercedes-AMG Project ONE – Amelia Island Concours 2018 Photoset

The AMG Project ONE has an undeniable magic in the flesh that is absent in most photography. The slinky, almost formless nature of the bodywork is actually a pure, emotive skin wrapped tight around each wheelhouse like cheekbones.  A supermodel of a machine if there ever was one. The dimensions alone are damn near Chiron large, for one, but the cabin tucked inboard radically too.  A lower than low roof and snorkel intake up top are almost casual in their hardcore obviousness. Watching the car arrive silently was quite a spectacle indeed.  Project ONE is a star! Even with its …

Best of Amelia Island – 2018 Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus SCG003S Stradale – Photos & Videos

An absolutely phenomenal car is what it takes to win the real Concours trophies. In our book, a hypercar like no other is enough. SCG003S is exquisite in person.  The details for its transformation to “luxury” version of the SCG003 LMP car are slight outside. Full CHMSL and side idicator lights have a very NHTSA feel.  A backup lamp and rear fog are included along with taillights.  And a plate. This is a road car.  Fully legal in every state via a new low-volume manufacturer US certification. $2.4 mil is the cost and six are spoken for.  20 more on …

This Group 5 rally racer won the WRC championship in the silhouette category for two years running for 1980 and 1981.  It was a bleeding-edge technological showpiece that ran a carbonfiber chassis and part-kevlar bodywork. Great to meet this stunner at the Amelia Island Concours 2017, where it actually lives locally in the stunning collection of John Campion. We had the pleasure of seeing its home garage before the concours and almost had to sit down from excitement.  So much Martini Racing and so many authentic Lancia race-winners! 1971 Bizzarrini 128P Prototype Speedster at Amelia Island Concours [28 Photos]

A barchetta speedster as a racecar!?  This car is inspired by the top can-am spyder style LMP1 racecars of its era — all giant wings and scoops galore.  A simple rollbar and twin plexiglass cowls instead of a windshield means this is a helmets-on affair at speed.  The pure definition of street speedster cool! This flowing and curvy design style was the anti-wedge.  Counter-programming versus the sharp Countach and Esprit look, perhaps.  Curvy panel surfaces like these would take decades to go mainstream.   1971 Bizzarrini 128P Prototype

1938 Mercedes-Benz 540K Streamliner at Amelia Island Concours [40 Photos]

The 540K Streamliner is always a delight to see and photograph.  A few things to note: the machine is HUGE! It is truly enormous by all dimensions, including its width.  A massive scale for a road car. The next is that this machine was as otherworldly and advanced in 1938 as it seems today.  Nothing approaching such a streamlined design was ever applied to a closed, luxury grand tourer of a car.  This machine excelled at a core MB trait: extreme high speed and extreme luxury.  Their hotrod limos and perhaps the S-Class Coupe still embody most of the …

The new Levante in Blu Emozione paintwork is gorgeous and quite unique in its design.  We love its serious, toothy nose and sharky hood/grille edge.  Not as sure about the rear three-quarter angle or the slightly narrow-looking rubber. The truck is even more special on the inside, where it is lined with Zegna cashmere, leathers and suedes from roof to floor.  Quite pretty.  Not a huge back seat but decent trunk room versus F-Pace or the Cayenne/Macan. The Levante starts from $74k  with 350HP while the S kicks off from $84k with a tuned V6TT making 424 ponies.  2017 Maserati …

The G65 and this G550 are actually priced pretty similarly.  The 4×4 comes in G550 and G63 variants, with this G550 coming in at about $220k.  The G65 is just a few thousand more and will be MUCH quicker.  But not nearly as outlandish.   2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4

A car whose in-person effect was knee-weakening? This new LS500. So, so new and so revolutionary for the Lexus icon.  Wait until you see this car’s unreal side sculpting and ultra-LWB, fastback-like proportions.  Its nose wears a next-gen level of sculpting throughout the bumper and hood.  The grille almost takes a back seat to the intensely low, long and muscular fenders and slim LED headlights.  The new DRL’s little lashes are intriguing too. A ‘racecar for the road’ is almost cliche these days in how often it describes sports and supercars.  But this XKSS was a revolution in its time: it added bumpers, road lights and a luggage rack to the LeMans-dominating speed of the XKD.  Of, and a windshield, softtop and side glass! But beyond these detail mods, the XKSS is pure racecar. In person, its otherworldly curves and body flow are spectacular to behold.  The curt front end metal wraps the oval intake and glassed-in headlamps with no flab whatsoever.  Just like a bubble flying through the universe.  But this bubble …

Here is a stunning racer that stands proud even in a line of million-dollar one-offs at Amelia Island Concours 2017. What really spoke to us about this Alfa Romeo is its artful, graceful and yet quite serious racing bodywork.  The chassis is fully shrouded for aero smoothness — right down to the louvered frame section down below, covered arrow steel for the front suspension, and teardrop tail with zero shutlines.  It is basically a one-piece clamshell for most of the metal!  Even the windshield is a nice flip of metalwork. 1894 Silsby Fourth Size Horse-Drawn Steam Pumper 9

1894 SILSBY Horse-Drawn Steam Fire Engine – RM Auctions Amelia Island 2016 Highlights

Motorized, steam fire engines were some of the highest-tech wagons on the roads between 1850 and the dawn of the motorcar 50 years later. The need for mechanized, high-volume water pumps to extinguish urban and industrial accidents was what drove such huge innovation at the time.  These high-tech water wagons didn’t know at the time that their steam-engine solutions would spur internal combustion.   For this machine, the steam boiler drove a turbine, which then drove a water pump. Hoses attached to the input would pull water through the system and out the main fire-fighting nozzles and ladders at high pressure and volume. …

But look past the twin chrome-rimmed circles on light on this Maserati Sebring and you have the basis for some seriously futuristic sports coupes. The long hood and sunken grille and delicious, while the flat surfacing and boxy glasshouse would become mainstream and popular a full 20 years later in the 1980s. As fantastic as the Stratos production models were, the rally car is in another league of intensity. Giant fender flares, hugely oversized tires and a raised ride height make this exotic wedge look as ready for off-roading as was possible. Considering it is essentially a hypercar, the idea of whipping through the forest, drifting so wide that the side windows look forward is almost unreal. Terrifying levels of power, extremely limited grip and flyweight dimensions mean the Stratos was a next-level machine in the world of rallying. A few things lost in the name of ultimate high-speed glory. Seeing the 1966 Porsche 906 Carrera 6 beside a close descendent, the 1968 908K, makes clear how carefully Porsche was refining its alloy spaceframe racecar during the 1960s. They really knew they were on to something with the ultra-low boxer engine masses, mounted right behind the driver for optimal handling. 2015 Mercedes-Maybach S600 8

2015 Mercedes-Maybach S600 Inside and Out from Amelia Island

Updated 3.16.15 We are starting to see the logic behind Mercedes-Maybach. The second rebirth of this brand is now a much more subtle affair. That goes for the sales experience as well as the curb appeal of the car. The biggest change for the new Maybach versus the previous generation or the Rolls-Royce Phantom/Bentley Mulsanne competition is all about subtly. Like it or not, from afar this is just a blend-in S-Class limo. It takes time up close to see its unique grille detailing, polished-alloy window surrounds, or gigantic saucer wheel designs. These are all nice touches, but pale in …

Amelia Island – 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder – Roof Off, LEDs On!

Still captivating and quite special: the Porsche 918 Spyder. Roof off, lights on. Enjoy. The most interesting part of the shoot was seeing the low-beam LEDs of the 918. They are just an explosion of light from within the rather-larger quad-LED elements. It is balanced and menacing and best-in-class for hypercar light signatures. 2015 Porsche 918 Spyder

2015 Porsche 911 GTS Club Coupe – USA Debut in 59 Amelia Island Photos

The risk with so many special editions of one car is major buyer and auto journalist fatigue. See Aston Martin for a prime example. But Porsche seems to really excel when it comes to special editions that actually do feel special. This latest 911 GTS Club Coupe celebrates 60 years of the Porsche Club of America — and builds in C4S styling and wide hips, the SportDesign ducktail spoiler, and a handful of other goodies as standard. 60 cars will be made, with a base price of $136,000.  2015 Porsche 911 GTS Club Coupe – USA 2015 Porsche 911 GTS …

2016 Mercedes-AMG GLE63-S Inside and Out From Amelia Island

The new GLE63 S Model made a fairly striking static debut at Amelia Island’s Ritz-Carlton hotel this weekend – stopping traffic and causing a commotion. This is the first-known outdoor showing of the new SUV Coupe muscle-truck, with its ultra-modern Benz nose in its sportiest, gloss-black best. This bumper on the hottest-yet GLE63 AMG Coupe — an all-new truck that is also heading to showrooms as the comparatively modest GLE450 AMG and a few other smaller engines. Almost no bumper is actually left up front. Like the new AMG GT, the nose is almost a wall of intercoolers and radiators. …

A huge number of incredible photos to share from Amelia Island Concours 2015!  Let’s kick off the data download with the absolutely stunning 2015 Fisker Rocket from Galpin Auto Sports. This is the prototype first shown at SEMA in November, with its $50,000 paintjob as stunning now as it was then. But it is not the flake that really makes the Fisker Rocket such an event of a car.   The power of the model-year in full effect with this 1953 Corvette, which is ballparked at $350,000 when it goes up for auction in March. This is triple the estimate of the identical 1954 model. But the 1954 is far less exclusive. The first year of Corvette production was actually fraught with peril and assembly issues. The never-before-used fiberglass bodywork proved extremely challenging to produce accurately, let alone assemble. A new setup wherein the complete bodywork was lowered onto the frame helped make 1954 a massive production year. They are both special, but obviously the collector value of the …

This Arnolt-Bristol by Bertone certainly applies — a run of 143 total rebodies of the Bristol 404 completed to order by Bertone in Italy. The design shows how an odd chassis package can actually inspire fantastic design solutions. The donor Bristol had a particularly tall engine, which needed to be shrouded in perhaps the Arnolt-Bristol’s most characteristic style: an almost cartoonishly-swoopy panel form.   Harry Miller was a Wisconsin-born racecar designer and engineer who innovated new engine designs and tested them on the world’s fastest racetrack: the oval of the Indianapolis 500. Legend says that 80-plus-percent of the Indy cars fielded in the 1920s were Miller designs, with at least a dozen race-winners from 1911 to 1933 when his business folded. Harry Miller’s race team would go on after being purchased by his shop foreman and chief machinist Fred Offenhauser, who would continue the race team until the 1980s. This 1927 Boyle Valve Special did not win the race, disappointing Miller considering he …

This might seem easy today, with six-lane motorways throughout the world and pavement allowing high-speed progress for even the most unskilled drivers. But in the 1930s, the idea of averaging more than 90-mph in a car, across long distances, was pure fantasy and hyperbole. Like something right out of …

Therefore, you can imagine my internal surprise at my blase feelings toward this magnificent 1939 57C — which were less than positive. I just didn’t like it. 1914 Mercedes-Benz GP Car This car does not photograph with quite the same intensity and impact of seeing it up close. There are numerous elements that truly reminded me more of a racehorse than a racecar — including the specially-made leather bonnets for much of its suspension and braking gear. Why? To keep the grime out while putting its 105-horsepower to use hitting nearly 67MPH. In 1914, those were death-defying speeds. The Dunlop Cord tires are filled harder than horseshoe steel: 80-plus PSI to maintain shape, versus about a 35PSI max in modern cars. But the real racehorse impression? This …

Amelia Island 2014 — Marque Highlights — VOLVO PV444 and 122S Amazon Coupe — Pre-Dating BMW 3 series Ancestors

These Volvo’s were immaculate and very appealing. The white car (122S Amazon Coupe, we believe) established a template for small, rear-drive sports sedans that firmly did not exist yet from anyone — including BMW or anyone else. The BMW 1600 (later the 2002) would ride to greatness as the current 3 series. The 122’s early-1960s imports into the United States showed how far ahead Sweden was at the time of Germany in some ways. Sweden largely sat out WWII and maintained much of its sovereign wealth as a result. The PV444 is even more iconic for many Volvo fans, and …

1965 Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia Type 1 Concept – Amelia Concours 2019

It was delightful to have the classic VW class this year at the Amelia Island Concours. Among the notable Vee-Dubs was this rarely-seen 1965 concept for the second-generation Karmann Ghia. Ghia styling studio assigned the project to an up-and-comer named Giorgetto Giugiaro — and the resulting design was decades ahead of its time. From the curvi-linear surfaces to the flush-mounted lighting, this Karmann Ghia must have looked positively bizarre versus the teacup shape of the original. But there was genius in this design, albeit perhaps too futuristic to be viable. Favorite elements include the sleek roofline, targa top and very …

Abarth made a great name for himself by making custom racecars from Fiat bits.  Fiat 500s were in amble supply at the time so Abarth was free to experiment with many layouts, including this mid-front-engine design.  The paltry 66-horsepower available meant that lightness, corner speed and aero were everything. This 207/A has alloy bodywork to make the most of the power available, and its design was very smart for 1955. Some of the coolest elements of the racer’s design …

There is something really spectacular about “finding” a priceless exotic car just parked silently.  Slid into a space like any Camry, locked and left alone for however long.  The location helps.  This back lot is behind the Amelia Island Ritz residences.  On Concours weekend.  Which does tend to help the selection. WHen the car in question is the stunningly fast, low and lean Delahaye 135S Competition Roadster!? The patina of this car — its dull paintwork, its myriad road rash scars, and its unpolished brass grille details — shows it is likely authentic.  Sick, perhaps, but we thought it might …

1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I Lightweight Replica 6

Gooding Amelia 2015 – 1961 Jaguar E-Type Series I Lightweight Replica

Among the hundreds of fantastic cars up for sale at the 2015 Gooding & Company auction in Amelia Island this year, Jaguar E-Types were proudly represented. Most sold for pricing in the range of $150,000 to $300,000. As such, this Series I Lightweight’s estimated price of $400,000-plus was always an ambitious total, with a possibility that it would not meet its reserve price. Despite being …

Gooding Amelia 2015 - 1951 Lotus Mk IIIB Was First-Ever Customer Lotus 7

Gooding Amelia 2015 – 1951 Lotus Mk IIIB Was First-Ever Customer Lotus

The sale …

Gooding Amelia 2015 – 1973 Lamborghini Espada Series III Earns $99k

Lamborghini has its roots in front-engine GT cars — but they are consistently some of the least-loved V12 Italian exotics in history. One look at the profile of this long 1970s timecapsule does most of the explaining — it is ungainly and alarmingly awkward in its proportions. This might have to do with its supercar designers — Marcello Gandini and Bertone were more well-versed in mid-engine hypercar wedges than they were in practical, roomy cruisers. The Espada III is the best of the line, with these models packing air conditioning and wood-rimmed cabin details, but not the jumbo bumpers that …
