1978 Pontiac Trans Am Pro Touring – Track-Attack Showcar Is Also Road Legal

1978 Trans AmI defy you to find a faster, meaner and more intense second-gen Firebird Trans Am!

No.

Not even ‘find.’

I defy you to imagine a more hardcore upgrade of this iconic F-body. Nearly every detail under the skin, the carbon-fiber hood and bespoke racing cabin is all-new and all-modern.  Only the custom Forgeline alloys with a massive tire bite betray the original looks outside this stunner, however.

That combination of old and new makes this a real dreamweaver of a machine.  The estimate of this Pro Touring custom is about $120k — for which you will have a showcar, track car and street car par excellence.  This Trans Am Pro Touring is Americana at its best.

Opinions vary on the origins of the Pro Touring movement. The term itself is said to have been coined in 1993 by “Chevy High Performance” magazine editor Jeff Smith and GM Program Engineering Manager Mark Stielow, who competed in the 1993 One Lap of America in his specially prepared 1969 Camaro. Whatever the truth, one fact stands above all: Pro Touring machines are mean to be driven, be it on the street, road course or drag strip, the highway, in autocross or slalom. This 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am is an excellent example of the Pro Touring concept that has captured the imagination of the nation’s gear heads.

A daily driver, track car and showpiece all in one, it incorporates cutting-edge materials and components to far exceed the original’s performance in every measurable way, starting with its fully built GM 6.0 L LS-series all-aluminum V-8. Fitted with Edelbrock induction, MSD 6LS ignition, a billet aluminum serpentine belt-drive system and Hooker exhaust manifolds with side exhaust, it nestles between carbon-fiber inner fenders and is backed by a Hurst-shifted 6-speed manual transmission and Torque Tough Ford 9-inch rear end. Detroit Speed mini tubs and subframe connectors combine with Stage II Speedtech suspension, Wilwood 6-piston 4-wheel disc brakes and Nitto tires on 19-inch custom Forgeline wheels. The cockpit has been completely customized with stitched upholstery, Corbeau racing seats and harnesses, Vintage Air, GlowShift gauges, a Kenwood stereo and a roll bar. Topped off with show-quality medium Blue paint and Trans Am graphics, this is an exemplary Pro Touring T/A.
