Blood Type Racing Makes 500HP Hyundai VELOSTER Turbo R-Spec for SEMA 2015

btr velosterBlood Type Racing delivered a Best of SEMA concept last year in its 800HP Genesis Coupe (photo gallery below). Stunning ideas and execution made that hemoglobin-hued showcar so special, we’d be scared to drive it on the highway — let alone sideways on a racetrack!

BTR earned a pretty high honor for its incredible 2014 efforts: another slot in the Hyundai official SEMA customs roster.

This year brought a pretty big challenge, however, for the Blood Type hoons: a Veloster Turbo R-Spec as the starting point.

The Veloster is a challenging tuner platform for a variety of reasons, but none more than its front-drive origins with a max stock horsepower rating below 200 ponies.

Doubling or tripling that power would be enormously expensive, with serious diminishing returns in the fun-to-drive nature of the car. Sure, power is create. But understeer is not, nor is front axle tramp — both long-running and virtually uncurable front-drive limitations.

So quite a challenge for Blood Type Racing to make a custom road racer that is as powerful as a rally car, yet with a tenth the grip.

A laundry list of changes and upgrades went into the BTR Veloster Turbo R-Spec demonstrated on video below.  For a master guide on cranking 500HP from 1.6-liters, also check out the detailed upgrades list in the tech details below.

SEMA 2014 Hyundai BTR Genesis Coupe

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Oct. 7, 2015 – Blood Type Racing Inc., the renowned Chicago-based tuner known for his extreme take on Korean vehicles, has revealed its Veloster Turbo R-Spec built for SEMA. The BTR Edition Veloster has an evil twist, designed to look as though it just switched over to the dark side. The car will be revealed at Hyundai’s SEMA press conference on November 3 at 11:30 a.m. PT, in Las Vegas.

The vehicle’s evil appearance began with a “Carbon Black” paint job, accented with a red racing stripe running from the front splitter up onto the hood. A carbon fiber wide-body kit gives the car a muscular, more aggressive stance, and front-mounted aero canards, front splitter and a rear deck spoiler provide down force at speed. Red accents on the custom SSR three-piece wheels, along with red projector “demon eye” headlamps add a final demonic touch to the vehicle’s exterior.

Using the Veloster’s 1.6-liter “Gamma” four-cylinder as a starting block, BTR added new cylinder sleeves, a high-boost turbocharger from Garrett, and custom connecting rods and pistons. With a retuned OEM ECU working in tandem with the strengthened engine internals, power output is now more than 500 horsepower, maintaining OEM drivability through use of Hyundai’s latest GDI technology. The interior has been stripped down and given the full, race-spec treatment with the addition of a four-point roll cage, Sabelt bucket seats, harnesses and steering wheel, along with audio upgrades from Rockford Fosgate and Tanabe OLED Revel gauges.

“The focus of this build was to boost the performance capabilities of the Veloster R-Spec while creating one of the angriest-looking Hyundai vehicles to chew up the pavement,” said Sam Lee, Director of Marketing, Blood Type Racing, Inc. “The engine tune on this vehicle is pushing the small-displacement motor to the edge. With a specific output of 312 horsepower/liter, we’re pushing this small displacement motor close to Formula 1 levels of performance. We’ve developed a number of internal components to help manage the power demands of this new engine, and paired with our hunkered-down suspension and aggressive exterior visuals, this Veloster is guaranteed to turn heads on the SEMA show floor.”

Lastly, both the BTR Veloster Turbo and 800 hp Genesis Coupe from 2014 SEMA are featured in the Racing Rivals video game, available now for download on your IOS or Android devices.

HYUNDAI’S 2015 SEMA LINEUP FEATURES SIX VEHICLES BUILT BY THE INDUSTRY’S BEST TUNERS

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., Nov. 3, 2015 – Once again, Hyundai has teamed up with some of the best vehicle tuners in the automotive community to deliver six concept vehicles for SEMA 2015. This year’s builds feature three of Hyundai’s all-new 2016 Tucson crossovers, two high-powered Genesis Coupes, and a Veloster Turbo R-Spec. Hyundai will be showcasing these creations at its SEMA display in Center Hall (booth #24387) at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Nov. 3-6, 2015.

The lineup of Hyundai vehicles includes:

  • ARK Performance Solus Genesis Coupe
  • Bisimoto Engineering Tucson
  • Blood Type Racing Veloster Turbo R-Spec
  • JP Edition Tucson
  • Rockstar Performance Garage Tucson
  • TJIN Edition Genesis Coupe

“Every year we partner with some of the best tuners in the business to deliver the most exciting vehicles at SEMA,” said Mike O’Brien, vice president, Product and Corporate Planning, Hyundai Motor America. “With this year’s builds, we wanted to showcase a range of vehicle tunability, from off-road performers to hunkered-down racers, and these final products exceeded our expectations by every measure.”

Photos, videos and additional details on Hyundai’s SEMA vehicles are available at HyundaiNews.com. For the first time, Hyundai will be streaming the entire news conference via Periscope. To watch the reveal and exclusive tuner interviews live, follow Hyundai on Periscope (Hyundai USA).

ARK Performance Solus Genesis Coupe
Leveraging its long-standing relationship with Hyundai, ARK Performance created the race-inspired Solus Genesis Coupe, which blends performance and luxury to take on the established performance completion. The vehicle’s design focused on creating a wider visual look to give a more powerful stance using ARK’s own “Solus” wide body kit, and the interior was given a complete makeover with a redesigned dashboard, race-bred steering wheel and gauges, with ample carbon fiber. Hyundai’s 3.8-liter “Lambda” V6 engine was stroked to 4.0-liters and boosted via a Rotrex supercharger to produce more than 500 horsepower.

Bisimoto Engineering Tucson
For its fourth consecutive Hyundai SEMA build, Bisimoto Engineering built the most-powerful Tucson crossover ever. To deliver a final output of 700+ horsepower, Bisimoto started with Hyundai’s 2.4-liter “Theta II” engine, mating strengthened internals with fast-burning flex-fuel, a high-boost turbocharger and an upgraded engine management system. The builder finished the exterior with a very clean “street fighter” look, riding on custom air-ride suspension, white five-star race-spec wheels and sticky, R-compound rubber.

Blood Type Racing Veloster Turbo R-Spec
The Blood Type Racing (BTR) Edition Veloster was created with an evil twist, designed to look as though it just switched over to the dark side. The sinister visuals began with a “Carbon Black” paint job accented with a red racing stripe, augmented with a carbon fiber wide-body kit to give a muscular, more aggressive stance, front-mounted aero canards, front splitter and a rear deck spoiler. Utilizing Hyundai’s 1.6-liter “Gamma” engine as a starting point, BTR added new cylinder sleeves, a high-boost turbocharger from Garrett, custom connecting rods and pistons, and a retuned OEM ECU to deliver more than 500 horsepower.

JP Edition Tucson
John Pangilinan continues to blur the lines between lifestyle and automotive with his 2016 Tucson Adventuremobile. The vehicle blends Hyundai’s new crossover platform with a passion for the great outdoors, perfect for the weekend getaway. The most obvious addition was a Treeline Tamarack roof-top tent, with ample room to sleep two campers. The exterior was beefed up with the addition of an Aries bull bar and side steps, Rigid Industries LED lights, a custom 1.5-in. suspension lift for extra ground clearance, and Toyo Open Country A/T II tires with RAYS Gram Lights 57DR wheels to provide the extra grip needed for the occasional off-road excursion.

Rockstar Performance Garage Tucson
For the tuner’s first official Hyundai build, Rockstar Performance Garage (RPG) injected serious off-road lifeblood into Hyundai’s popular Tucson crossover. Starting with the most important piece of any off-roader, the suspension, RPG added a fully-custom, adjustable shocks and struts system from King Shocks. Riding on massive, 32-in. MTZ P3 tires from Mickey Thompson, the vehicle now sits 6-in. over stock height. The vehicle received a power boost via a high-flow Magnaflow exhaust system, a new K&N intake and intercooler from Mishimoto.

TJIN Edition Genesis Coupe
Rounding out Hyundai’s SEMA lineup, TJIN Edition created an underground-racing inspired Genesis Coupe. To produce more than 500 horsepower, TJIN started with Hyundai’s 3.8-liter “Lambda” V6 engine, boosting the motor with a Vortech supercharger kit built by the power gurus from Bisimoto Engineering, then added a free-flowing exhaust system, Vortech front mount intercooler and blow-off valve. KW coilovers, a custom front lip, rear spoiler and trunk lid from Unique Fabrication give a more aggressive stance, and the exterior was finished in a custom Kylie Tjin Axalta green paint job.
