2015 Freightliner Inspiration Truck Concept Crosses Hoover Dam Autonomously

2015 Freightliner Inspiration Truck ConceptMercedes and Daimler trucks have made Nevada into an auto-pilot test track!

After the recent Mercedes-Benz F015 concept showed a self-driving limo, we now have a near-production Freightliner Inspiration Truck Concept.

Nevada’s lonely roads are an ideal testing ground for tech like this. Outside Vegas and Reno, the state has the lowest population density of anywhere in the USA.

Using a mega-system of sensors, the Inspiration Truck is the first big rig to be road-legal in auto-pilot mode anywhere in the country.  Currently, the Inspiration Truck is just certified for auto-pilot driving within Nevada, but this is still a watershed moment.

Freightliner celebrated the occasion with a deep facelift on the Casacadia production truck, bringing extra aero efficiency, integrated camera placements and all-new adaptive DRL lighting.

These LEDs all glow a solid blue when the truck is on the highway in autopilot, but normal white and amber for regular driving.

The Inspiration Truck is not exactly a drone — think of it more like true super cruise, activated once on the highway only.
