2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee – Buyers Guide to Engines, Suspensions and Top Trims: Summit, Altitude and Overland

The 2014 Grand Cherokee is a hugely versatile truck – both in terms of its on-road/off-road skill set and the numerous configurations available.

The base Jeep GC Laredo comes in at just $29,000 – and even this 4×2 truck has the latest 3.6-liter engine and eight-speed automatic. In other words, it is no slouch and a solid handler in corners from that light nose.

But many buyers will have major engine envy if they stick with the V6. Why? The Three other optional engines catapult the Grand Cherokee from competing with the Ford Explorer — and on to competing with the BMW X5 and Audi Q7.

The optional engines are all fantastic. The EcoDiesel V6 is a particularly smooth, refined and torque-y gem – and pairs perfectly with Jeep’s new ZF eight-speed automatic.

The 5.7-liter HEMI V8 is still an all-star, and is also paired with the new suspension. So far, it is the first Chrysler V8 model to receive the new transmission. This box is simply perfect – you will love its responsiveness and how perceptive it is.

 

The EcoDiesel upgrade runs about $4500, while the Hemi V8 is only $3000 extra.

A big leap in price is a sure thing for the loaded Summit and Overland models – which sticker at $46,000 and $51,000 respectively for the 4×4 models.

All the Grand Cherokee’s appear to be available in rear-drive as well — which is definitely worth considering if you live in a hot and dry climate. Tail-out power-slides a Jeep GC would certainly be a new experience for most 4×4 drivers!

Choosing a 4×4 system for the top-range Jeep models comes down the standard Quadra-TracII system or the uprated Quadra-Drive II system.

The QDII system brings locking diffs, while all Limited-and-above GC’s have terrain controls and sport modes.

The key features that make the Summit and Overland so enticing are:

– standard LED accents in bi-xenon HID headlights (optional on lower trims, standard here)

– standard Quadra-Lift air suspension. This is the smoothest and best way to cruise and road, so it must make off-roading even more posh as well. A lifted ride height setting is also in the cards for these air-spring Jeeps.

In terms of amenities and exterior style: the top our models do offer a variety of trims and general aesthetics. The below table shows the comparison.

My preference is for the Overland’s lower brightwork slash in the bumper, but with the Summit’s painted sills and other detailing.

Luckily, a stylish new model is in the cards for 2014 as well: the GC Altitude that is coming in a few months.
